During the first 9 months of this year, the number of shootings occurring on Chicago city expressways more than doubled. Soaring from 83 in 2020, to 185 motorists being shot this year.

To help combat this increase in shootings, the Illinois State Police increased patrolling of Chicago expressways yesterday.

Story: abc7chicago.com...;-nearly-200-shootings-reported/11067909/

Tragically, one of the patrolling Illinois State Police troopers was gunned down in his patrol car, just hours after this crackdown on expressway shootings began.

An Illinois state trooper died after a shooting Friday afternoon on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 43rd Street.

Illinois State Police said 36-year-old Gerald Mason was found in his squad car in the northbound local lanes of I-94, shortly before 2 p.m.

He was taken to University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m. Illinois State Police said in a statement the shooting was "officer involved," but did not say how.

Illinois State Police said there is no known threat to the public, and that the investigation into Mason's death is ongoing.

This appears to be a bad news story inside a bad news story. The number of injuries and deaths resulting from 185 vehicles being shot at, while driving through the city of Chicago should scare every resident and tourist alike.

And the first day the Illinois State Police attempt to do something to stem this rise in shootings, there is the death of an Illinois State Police Officer, with an "officer involvement".

Maybe a partner killed him? The TV and Print media had this as the number #1 story in Chicago Friday evening, but there's no mention of a man-hunt. There are rumors he committed suicide. I suppose that would qualify as "officer involvement"?

Either way, a tragic start to an initiative put in place to reduce Chicago Expressway shootings.

I would assume that the gangs have a new delivery system that may work better than drive by shootings.

More patrols will only drop the response times for the cleanup.

You need to change gang culture or else eliminate the gangs.

This is the suburban warfare that no one wants to talk about.

The shootings are happening on the expressways in the city of Chicago.

Why do you refer to it as, "suburban warfare"?

I read an article from NBC about an hour after the incident. It stated "a self inflicted gun shot". I went back tonight to look for that piece, and it was no longer there.

Motorists stopped their cars and ran over to his squad car to see why he was slumped over. They assumed he shot himself and posted that to social media.

The official state police statement says: "officer involved".

It's possible a fellow State police or Chicago city officer shot him and drove away. They often talk to each other on the side the expressways for a few minutes.

The whole purpose of expressways is to get one home to the suburbs. People don't drive on them endlessly. The gangs are in the suburbs aren't they?

Or is your definition of suburbs different than mine which is possible since we live in different countries. As an example, the question, "Does anyone have a rubber I can borrow?" has completely different meanings for you and me.

It's cut and dried in the US. I live in the suburbs of Grand Rapids. The highways that cut through the area run through both GR, and the surrounding suburbs. If a shooting happens on one of them in Grand Rapids itself, it's an URBAN area. Not suburban. As you are not yet in the suburbs physically, you're are in an urban area.

Edit: And if you're going to get hung up on highways/freeways/expressways being only for suburban transit, you don't get out much. Highway exits are often treated as local area shortcuts, traffic depending.

Chicago expressways are in the Urban areas of Chicago. Once they reach the suburbs the names usually reverts back to the Highway Number.

For example, U.S. Interstate 80 (I-80) runs 2,900 miles from East to West. While it passes through the Chicago metro area, it is called (by locals) the Kingery expressway. (Truckers and travelers still see it as Interstate-80 on their GPS)

Many locals use it for getting from one part of town to another, because there are several entrances and exits on the Kingery Expressway.

The State Trooper was killed yesterday on the Dan Ryan expressway. It is known as Interstate-94 to travelers/truckers, and runs over 1,500 miles, from Montana to Michigan. (Half of this express way is known as the Dan Ryan, and half of it is called the John F. Kennedy) Lots of entrances and exits to the Dan Ryan and Kennedy expressway in Chicago metro.

The Coroner Report is in:

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Illinois state trooper Gerald Mason died after a shooting Friday afternoon on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 43rd Street.

His death has been ruled a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said Saturday.

State police said Mason worked for District Chicago and was an 11-year veteran of the force.

Illinois State Police said Mason was on duty when he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

His first day on the new task force patrolling Chicago expressways to hopefully cut down on the number of expressway shootings, and officer Gerald Mason shoots and kills himself on a Chicago expressway.

One can't help but wonder what was going on in this youngish single man's life, to cause him to not want to live another day.

That stuff is very confusing.

You drive on a parkway and park on a driveway.

Each to there own.

Thanks for the tips.

FYI

1,606 People shot from June to August in Chicago.

www.breitbart.com...

The liberal Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot, is NOT pro-police.

The U.S. States Attorney (Kim Foxx) is NOT pro-police.

It's no wonder Police officer emotional despair is at an all-time high in Chicago.

For their own sanity, they should relocate to places where they are wanted/appreciated.

Update on Shootings while people drive through/around Chicago on the city expressways...

Shootings on Chicago-area expressways have more than doubled over the last year. There have been 213 reports of shootings or shots fired so far in 2021, according to state police. In the same period in 2020, there were 101 reports of gunfire.
Source: www.nbcchicago.com...

What's of great concern is that many of these shootings appear to be gang initiation related. To earn a stripe, the thug must shoot someone driving on one of Chicago's expressways/freeways/highways.

The shootings are no longer confined to "the hood". Many are visiting business people, tourists, commuters, and residents who are merely going from one place to another, inside the city of Chicago.

For this reason, a lot of resources are being dedicated to stopping these random highway shootings.

🤞(fingers crossed)
