We had this one guy one time I’m not really sure what was wrong with him it’s something to do with his heart or fluid or something because the Coast Guard dropped a guy down from the helicopter and this guy knew what he was doing because looked at the sick guy for maybe a minute and grabbed this big hollow needle and jammed it in his chest and it sounded like a windbag was being released.
Shortly after he was in the basket then helicopter and it disappeared over the horizon. You never know when you’re going to need a good doctor and where is going to find them. crazy stuff....

I’ve heard more than one story about the wrong leg being amputated.
I had to right yes on the one coming off and no on the one staying.
Been a few guys that had to get airlifted because of gallbladders and what’s that other thing, the second stomach we no longer use.

Child birth.....
I am glad I do not have to experience that. That sounds like a really bad delivery. Seems that everything turned out OK though even if it was a horrible experience.

The worst pain I’ve ever felt was a kidney stone and when they went in to get it he tore something and then I had to have ortho surgery to fix it.

You can’t imagine how many times I have been screwed up in the hospital. I could go on and on and on

Spending all those years on commercial fishing boats made me stronger than most people can imagine...

So that's how you survived that morphine. I was wondering how you did and what you meant when you said no other patient there could have lived through it. Commercial fishing, my respect dude.

Yes my child is healthy and there's nothing left but the scar. I wouldn't say it's "OK" though. Imagine pleading for more than a day, nobody believes you, you then finally get acknowledgment, again (the PDA) nobody believes you and then they cut into you anyways, it get's hushed up. That left a scar and tore up old wounds again too. Not only was I believing this is me dying, all the way that led to it I was not taken serious.

I was not the only women in that hospital having to endure it, a year or a two later this exact same thing happened to another women and she sued, I heard it on the radio. But I do not have the energy to sue the hospital. Money won't help me and closure won't happen. It won't undo it.

That’s awful!

Hospitals, some doctors....Wow!
More good docs than bad I believe but the truly terrible ones do stand out.
My wife, a 20+yr ICU nurse knew who was who.
They all do.
My first amp was screwed up and had more had to be cut off.
Bone infection with MRSA. 6 months with 24/7 antibiotic pumps. penicillin and oxacillin.
That crushed my immune system.
I could write 5 detailed books
21 times in the OR

Now your username makes double sense.

The ICU nurses were those that had the most humanity of them all. If not for the reasons I would have been happy to go ICU because there I was treated with respect.

From feeling, it was like the midwifes and nurses protecting their colleagues by making it appear her wrong decision at 10pm has not happened. To ridicule my pleadings with her "coolness". Down in ICU they had a complete different opinion because they were on the receiving end of what was happening a floor above. Its was mother+child ICU. Later I went back and brought them praline and cake, not in person because ICU is locked off from the rest, need to ring a bell first but I hope they relayed it.

I had to get my gallbladder removed, guess I was born with a tiny tiny mis-shaped gallbladder.
While I was getting prepped for surgery I was asked if I wanted to be an organ donor. This lady came in, all smiles.
I said no, if looks could kill I’d be dead. There was nothing subtle, she was angry as the devil. I actually believe they would have killed me if I said yes.

My dad had a soldier in the army, he needed to have his leg amputated. He went in for surgery at the military hospital, and they amputated the WRONG leg. This is not a joke, and is 100% true. So he ended up losing both legs. His son had some mental issues and that happening to his dad didn’t help, so the son committed suicide. Super super sad situation.

I went to school with a girl whos dad was a surgeon and got sued for amputating the wrong leg on a guy. He read the chart wrong but I don't know how a good leg could be confused with a bad leg. Maybe after an accident, bruises on both but only one toxic. But then there was an anesthetist at the local hospital here that was found dead in the bathroom from an overdose. He could have killed someone. People being people behind the scenes.

Bless you that sounds terrifying! i. Sorry that happened to you.
In September 2018 I developed severe pre eclampsia whilst 7 months pregnant with my daughter. It was unusually aggressive and they started pumping me full of medications and sent me for an emergency hydralazine shot to force my blood vessels to dilate. 20 minutes later I am rushed down to theatre for an emergency c section. Spinal worked fine to start with but they took ages getting my daughter out as I was so swollen ( 16) kilos gained in 2.5 weeks.
She was delivered safely thank god and I had a few pictures taken with her them they whisked her up to neonatal. Minutes after this I developed a bleed and they told me they were stopping it but I started to develop pain in my upper abdomen.
The pain rapidly became unbearable and I started to get this bizarre sensation of warm liquid splashing on my thighs which in true melodramatic fashion I believed was the blood coming out and hitting my legs.i remember thinking Jeez I am really bleeding
I heard this awful low groaning sound which I didn't realise initially was coming from myself. Then the warm splattery feeling went down to my knees that was when I realised I shouldn't be able to feel my legs at all and I tried moving the left one. At this point the pain was unbearable, I can only liken it to a 30 stone person stood on my insides with red hot shoes, It was literally taking the breath from me.

Then I hear the surgeon and another Dr start arguing about how many swabs they had gotten out. He counted them and kept coming up to 14 she was angrily telling him no I got out 15 count again. The realisation that not only my spinal was wearing off but now they had lost a swab the size of a tea towel inside me me sent me into black out panic and my hands went under the curtain that was blocking our view and I started randomly slapping at hands and trying to put my stomach back together myself.
In the end the anesthetist and my partner had to restrain me whilst they started pulling around my insides trying to find it. Thank god the anesthetist realised what was happening and on the sly slipped me a general anesthetic to knock me out. My last words to him were am I dying which bless him he kindly told me no we won't let you die but this so enough now.
I wasn't even out properly before they tried intubating me and I remember the feeling of them having trouble forcing the tube down. They had to actually scan me to find this enormous swab unbelievably which I still can't wrap my head around luckily they found it.

I luckily got an apology from a few of the consultants but the whole debacle made the rounds in the maternity department with several of the nurses trying to advise me to put in a complaint.
7 months of trauma therapy followed as I had the most horrific PTSD relapse. Sadly me and my daughter were parted for 3 days following that in different hospitals.
Kicker is I am pregnant and due in 2 weeks and under the same consultant. Safe to say I am bricking it and hoping to have a natural birth.

I had been in labor for 23 1/2 hours and finally decided to get an epidural. They came in did the normal routine but hit something during the procedure that caused intense pain. I gave birth about 15 minutes later. They got me straight up out of the bed and I instantly had blinding pain in my head and was unable to go to the bathroom normally. An hour later I'm in tears my head hurts so bad and I need to go to the bathroom and still can't. I have to beg for a catheter. They finally relented on the catheter and pulled (if I recall correctly) around 80 oz of fluid out and acted surprised that it was so much as if I hadn't been begging them to help me for an hour.

All night my head is hurting so bad. I had had an epidural before and never had these effects. I spent all night crying in bed almost unable to turn my head the pain was so bad. The next day the doctor comes in and I tell him about the pain and he's all hateful like I am making it up.

Long story short, I didn't get an epidural. I received a spinal block by mistake. I should not have been allowed up that soon after it was given and the pain I felt while it was being administered was an air bubble being introduced into my spinal cord. The doctor didn't have the nerve to come in and tell me about the mistake. They had to go in and take blood from my arm and put it back into my spinal cord. The pain relented almost immediately.

I got a bill for that procedure as if they really expected me to pay to correct a mistake that could have easily killed me. I had back pain from that incident for at least 3 years.

It's scary to think how simple things can go so wrong sometimes.

a reply to: HairForceOne that sounds horrifying, sadly mistakes like this during childbirth are way to common. It's the learning to deal with it mentally afterwards which is the hardest. So sorry that happened to you
