Some is. Plum Island gave us Lyme disease, so being on an island dies not help.

Modifying diseases should be illegal, but when does a law ever stop this kind of thing.

The Sahara is where they burn deadly toxic chemicals with a super Duper Sunray machine that sometimes works but not always. I think the water turns purple around there.

I keep posting links like this because our understanding of these things might be much different than many seem to realize from any "side" whatsoever.

So the location would have to be very, very carefully selected and beyond that, be completely isolated from the surrounding atmosphere all together. There is also the potential issue of pathogens being dispersed into the surrounding earth. Not likely to be something that becomes an issue even in our lifetimes, but I would absolutely consider it a long term concern. We might also be able to reduce potential issues by doing it in places without animal reservoirs, but there are still issues.

We could also just.. not do dumb sh!+, but thats probably the least likely scenario.

If you do your experiment on a remote island, or in a controlled lab, you'll never learn how the virus would behave in the wild, which is exactly the kind of knowledge you wish to obtain if you wish your science to be useful.
