Until recently it was not known why so many cows, exported to the Middle East by ship, died on the 13 - 31 day journey. Scientists have now found
that, in the cramped, hot and badly ventilated cattle holds the gasses emitted by the cows can be fatal.
On one voyage last year 900 cows died causing certain breeds of cows to be banned from making the voyage by the Federal Government. Some animal
welfare groups thought the deaths were due to sudden changes in climate as the animals were transported.
A change in feed could be all that is necessary to stop the cows from emitting high levels of ammonia when they 'fart', which causes respiratory
problems in the confined spaces of the ship causing the animals to die before the end of the journey.
