I was just wondering because as I have mentioned previously, my life has not really changed at all in the last almost 2 years of this pandemic and I realize that has made me lack perspective on the experiences of others. I am very sorry that the level of fear is so high that the government feels compelled to make more regulation and reach further into our lives.

I want to understand this fear so I have a few questions for anyone, any side of the issue, about their personal, real-life experiences during the past almost 2 years of pandemic.

How many people do you know that have contracted covid-19 in real life?

How many of those people became violently ill, hospitalized or dead?

How many of those have long-lasting effects from their illness with covid-19?

I just feel like with all the divisive rhetoric on both sides, learning about the experience of others may help us come together. Remember that TPTB want us divided. I just want to understand why the level of fear exists.

1. 5 people that I personally know.

2. 4 became violently I'll as you put it. 1 is dead.

3. The 1 dead died from long covid, he contracted pneumonia and died in his sleep. He was also a family member.

None, that is until two fully vaccinated relatives acquired it months later- one hospitalized.

I had it bad in dec 2019.

Caught it from a group returning from China for Christmas.

I thought I was getting it again last month, but didn't get tested (did self quarantine), and it was so short & mild that not really sure.

An elderly lady across the street was killed by it.

Was told by paramedic neighbor that he has collected 'dozens' of covid & vax bodies in my small town (with VERY high senior citizen pop), but the nice lady across the street is the only one I'm aware of.

Not aware of any significant local cases since January.

Excellent idea for thread!

Hmm...remote working, company plans to keep it this way. Love it, no more long commute especially in winter. Daughter has school affected of course and she's supposed to intern for an early college program she's also in and has not yet been able to as she's going to intern with a prosecuting attorney and they are still not allowing people into court.

In a close group of let's say 25. 14 have had it. 5 hospitalized. 5 were very ill for at least 2 weeks, 4 were sick for a few days. All under 50 years old. 3 still dealing with symptoms or on medication such as blood thinners as they had so many blood clots in their lungs.

Luckily no friend or family passed, however they have had friends/ family who passed and I've had coworkers pass.

No issues with anyone who's been vaccinated except mild symptoms after the 2nd Vax.

It seems like this virus REALLY affects the elderly, oddly I live around a bunch of old farmers and nobody has gotten it, but I doubt these guys would even get tested if they were sick anyways so who knows.

I don't know anyone personally who caught covid (or if they did, went undiagnosed and it was not a severe case).

So zero for the other 2 questions as well.

1. I personally know 23 people that have been tested and confirmed to have had it with a large group of those being from a Pediatric Healthcare system I previously worked at.

I suspect another 6 people I know had it and did not get tested

2. 11 people of those confirmed 23 were severely ill including requiring extended hospital stays. Sadly 2 deaths are also in that group.

3. 3 of the people have long last effects.

Since you are the best (worse) answer so far I have a follow-up question, of the 5 people you know for sure caught it, were they related to each other or living in the same household or members of different households and if so, was the spread limited to other household members or were these all distinct infections not related to each other?

Quite a few that I know have had it. An extended family member died (father of an uncle’s ex wife). A few that were acquaintances of people I know. Of my regular gaming group, 3 out of the 8 of us have not had it. We also played on Fantasy Grounds (online table top software) for about a year during the lockdowns.

I've known a few, around five IIRC.

One went to the hospital after immunization. She was 99, survived somehow and returned home.

Another went to the hospital but it is unclear if she had COVID when she went. But she was put into the COVID ward and spent about two weeks hospitalized before returning home.

Another, who had other serious medical issues, died. I actually handled this person right after he passed, we were trying to resuscitate him. I was mildly ill for a while after that, but an antibody blood test did not indicate that I had contracted COVID.

Not aware of anyone with long-lasting effects.

Cheers

Wow that is a lot. I know you will obviously know of more than most who have caught it by virtue of working in the Healthcare industry. Did you know the circumstances of their hospitalization? Because I have read that people can feel fine and then all of a sudden end up needing emergency care so I was wondering if you have seen that at all?

The 4 survivors were 2 couples, so 2 households.

The death was a family member of mine and unrelated to the 4 others. Hope that helps.

Your post just reminded me of 2 more (possibles).

An elderly uncle on the other side of the country from me died in June, 2020, and his daughter (also his caregiver) died a week later.

Both had other serious health issues, and neither were tested, but we 'suspect' that both were covid deaths.

They weren't doing autopsies or even funerals at the time in Chicago.

I've run into people that have said they had it, but I cannot confirm. I don't usually get sick, but I have been sick with symptoms, but nothing serious. This last week actually, my whole body felt fatigued to the bones. But Idk, I haven't seen a doctor in almost twenty years, wasn't about to go now. Could have been anything. At any rate, my SO caught whatever it was too (she has the VAX), but it only lasted a few days for her. Supposedly we spread it to the sister in law and my nephew. Just bone fatigue and soreness. I'm not saying that it was Covid, because Idk. I'm just sharing since one of the symptoms I remember reading was like that. Other than that, yeah, no, can't say I can confirm any Covidians around me.

Four, so far.

One serious enough to have been hospitalized and placed on a ventilator.

That person is still recovering from lung damage after several months.

Only one death but they had recently had cancer and chemo and just couldn't handle the virus due to the effects of the cancer and chemo.

Lots that had it and were just pretty poorly like a very bad flu, mainly younger with no other health issues.

A close friend had it way back before it was testable but they've now said it was covid, he was in hospital for a couple of weeks and has long covid type stuff now. He's in and out of hospital with it but he's an ex heroin addict and a smoker and drinker and is also very fat so it's hardly surprising really.

Ummm ... my cousin's oldest, my sister's clan maybe (no formal, just lots of exposure quarantines), my coworker's fiance (vaxed), another coworker

A former high school teacher did die of it, but he was older (70s at least)

My coworker was suffering long term loss of smell
