Recently the Chinese Communist party announced that afterschool and weekend education would be banned. The reasons they gave were the unfairness towards poorer students.
www.cnbc.com...

The policy states that one of its major goals is to ease the burden and anxiety for Chinese parents wanting to give their children a good education.

The guidelines focus on the nine years of compulsory education before high school — from elementary to middle school — and call for academic tutoring businesses to restructure as non-profits.

The policy also prohibits those businesses from offering classes on weekends, holidays, summer and winter breaks — effectively allowing tutoring only on weekdays with a limited number of hours.

Initially companies told online English tutors things would continue until booked courses were finished. However today I logged on to Whales English to find my entire schedule had been erased. According to Reddit this happened because the CCP marched into the office and ordered a shutdown.

Other companies are apparently still operating but you can be sure the crackdown is coming. Whales was a good company to work for because once you were booked they guaranteed you 30 weeks of classes with the same students. You really got to know the students and built a sense of development together. A lot of other companies give you different random kids each week. I suspect that's why we got hit first. It seems the Chinese don't want the youth interacting with foreigners in a meaningful educational manner. Building up trust and respect between our countries.

I feel a great surge of pride to have been one of the first foreigners targeted as an enemy of the CCP.

This isn't just about online EFL. The state is basically mandating total control of education. It's not legal to Teach highschool students about Mathematics or Science if they pay for the lesson. Since by definition no professional teacher can work for free, it means total state control of learning. It's honestly quite a scary concept.

I'm not too worried about this coming to the west, not because "That could never happen here". We all know that's bull#.

Simply because we don't have the incredible tradition of education in your spare time. It's like if the UK took down all goalposts in parks because kids were getting too competitive. They're banning an iconic and extremely important piece of their own culture.

I thought people in China were all equally poor. Aren't they communists?

Isn’t that especially what the United States has done?

We put autistic kids in the same class as normal students.
We dumb down the grading standards so little Bobby can pass.
We made math racist.
We made college’s take students with lower qualifications.

Different methods, same results…

Brainwashed students that need the government to think for them.

Sounds like they are taking a page out of the Progressive playbook. Oh wait, they invented it.

Well ... you can spin that either way.

Here is what Beijing says (according toAljazeera)

Beijing is zeroing in on tutoring startups that thrived when schools sent students home, then launched a marketing free-for-all regulators say is funneling millions of kids into mind-numbing virtual classes with uncertain benefits.

Their concern centers not just on reckless pricing or advertising but also on the widening divide between the haves and have-nots — those who can afford to load up on extra lessons.

To that end, officials laid out a plethora of restrictions this month including limiting the after-school tuition fees companies can charge, and fined Yuanfudao and Zuoyebang for false advertising claims.

The afterschool online education is a huge market in China (parents put a massive focus on the best education for their kids), several multi-billion IPOs in that sector were lined up because of the enormous profits. Looks like those massive profits collided with what the CCP has outlined (someone didn't pay their share to the big guy).

That makes more sense then the "taking total control" narrative - especially when you consider that they already have total control!

Some poor people are poorer then others so in the name of equality the poor people must be made poorer for their own good!

It just makes common sense! ~fauci voice

China Has now added to this the banning of online games for under 18s:

Which makes a bit more sense in terms of building a great nation etc.

I can imagine a lot of parents are pretty frustrated by kids having no online classes or games to keep them occupied. Kids will be bouncing off the walls with boredom. And they all live in apartments without gardens. "Go and play outside" isn't much of an option on the 35th floor.
