Many bakeries have already closed down because they cannot afford the rising cost of fuel needed to power private generators, as electricity cuts last for around 20 hours a day...Lebanon has been gripped by a fuel crisis since the start of summer, with importers blaming shortages on a delay by the government in opening credit lines to fund imports.

The authorities have accused distributors of hoarding stock to sell it at higher rates on the black market or across the border in Syria.

A top medical center and one of Lebanon’s oldest and most prestigious university hospitals warned on Saturday it may be forced to shut down in less than 48 hours due to fuel shortages, which would threaten the lives of its critically ill patients.

In a stark warning, the American University of Beirut Medical Center, said 55 patients dependent on respirators, including 15 children, and more than 100 people with renal failure who are on dialysis would be immediately threatened.

The somber statement underscored the severity of Lebanon’s economic crisis, which has paralyzed the country. Fuel shortages have prompted many owners of large private generators to turn off the machines.

I'm not even sure what the big problem is. civil war / Islamofascists?

Lebanon has been going down hill for some time.

For any place going down hill, it generally starts slowly, then picks up speed (like when that huge explosion rocked the capitol of Lebanon earlier this year - destroying their port infrastructure and killing hundreds), and now they have lost so much irreplaceable infrastructure, that the slightest new disruption amplifies itself down the supply chain, to where they have now arrived: near-complete collapse!

It doesn't help also (adds insult to injury?) that the Lebanese currency is total over-printed fiat. That always seems to catch up to national banks in the end, regardless *cough*.

I would tell anyone: pay VERY close attention to Lebanon right now. This could be you / me / us ??? -- virtually anywhere on the planet -- next!
