I think the software is probably not connected, but... he was a very smart man and I'd never say never when he's involved. From early June on his Twitter there are a few good tweets and the frankness of his writing may have played a factor in his demise IMHO. Not much of what he said is news to me, but others may have feared he was getting ready to start spilling the beans.

Even if the traffic is undetectable, wouldn’t the actual antivirus software sitting on people’s computers be subject to examination by professionals to see what it does?

Perhaps he only spied on a limited number of selected individuals. But then he would have to be able to identify which computers belonged to those individuals. Maybe his business interests were larger and more varied than I am aware of.

But if spying was widespread, the sheer volume of data retrieved becomes an issue.

How would it be sorted to sift the illegal photos and videos from legal ones? Especially if one considers that “adult” materials can be pretty outrageous and still perfectly legal. Seems like any algorithm would find that a tough call.

Having humans looking at it would require a large staff. Large scale storage and staff are expensive. Unless he is getting paid somehow through blackmail or an arrangement with government, it seems like the overhead would be prohibitive in terms of the funding required.

The intelligence agencies can do this kind of mass collection and sorting, but their taxpayer funded resources are virtually unlimited.

Even the mammoth companies like Amazon and Facebook who do similar things are rumored to have government connections or at least to make money off selling their info.

It seems like the narrative we are hearing is that JM was kind of a hobbyist spy, scanning all his customer's computers and retrieving their data. Unless it generates cash somehow, I don’t understand how that would be practical on a large scale.
