Portishead

Portishead created a unique sound in their debut "Dummy," combining smoky jazz and trip-hop. So an equally good follow-up was a pretty tall order. Enter the self-titled "Portishead," which ups the eerie noir feel while not abandoning the cool electronic edge. In the months before their return, it seems appropriate to revisit their older material.

Beth Gibbons plays around with her vocals this time around -- while Gibbons's voice is normally very pretty, in a few songs she twists it into creepy monotones. It's a bit jarring at first, compared to her usual melodic singing, but it suits the darker songs here. The filtered, eerie intonations in "Cowboys" are downright spine-chilling.

My personal Fav of Portishead is " All Mine".

Now I know there are some Portishead fans out there... get in here and lets start discussN and stuff...

i didn't really know portishead when they were "in style". i did go back and listen to some of their stuff later but couldn't get into it. i do like hooverphonic though. they are somewhat remotely almost similar... =)

I was a huge fan!!! I just love chillin out to some Portishead, you cant beat the old trip hop for relaxing!!!

I never really liked Hooverphonic. '2 Wicky' and 'Barabas' are about the only ones I enjoy listening too. But Portishead started my facination with trip hop. I eventually found Massive Attack as well, and I reckon I like them better than Portishead, or at least like more songs. Risington is a random live one that I turn the volume up on as loud as it can go. Plus MA's instrumentals, like Montage and Danny the Dog are really really good.

Oh yeah, Tricky as well. There's one weird dude. I like it all./

i'd never heard their stuff till someone mentioned them here.can't recall who it was,it was this song though,roads.first 50 seconds are surreal

Amazing band alot of the stuff still holds up well today as well i can never forget the first time i heard Only You when i was young and got hooked.

i remember that one song by them called cowboys. that song was amazing. in fact that whole album was.
