Apparently this strange spiral seen all over Vanuatu skies this past weekend. Seen in Port Vila, all the way up in Santo, and in Tanna as well! Also seen by the neighboring countries New Caledonia and Fiji. It was spiraling for minutes before it disappeared. Similar spirals also appeared in:
Russia- April 2014
Mexico- March 2014
Norway- December 2009
Australia- June 2010
New Zealand- March 2011
Mongolia- June 2011
Ukraine- November 2011
Israel- June 2012

Anyone have any idea what these are from?

I'm going to go with a space launch of some sort. Those look a lot like a second stage burn.

It’s a missile launch of some kind. Sometimes a rocket motor will fail in such a way that it produces thrust that is misaligned with the flight direction. That causes the vehicle to pinwheel while the motor is still burning.

However, the Russian Topol missile induces a spin like this deliberately. Might be either one. Jim Oberg will know.

Thanks for quick feedback. I think the thing that I'm in awe of is the golden ratio at use in the spiral. It's absolutely gorgeous! I did more searching about them and found this. I have no clue what they're saying but it's pretty interesting to see. Link to Mexico spiral on the news

A part me thinks it natural, considering there are spirals drawn on cave walls.

Or the spirals in the caves are recollections of visitations by __________.

To each his own.

Of course there's the possibility it's Project Blue Beam.

Weather phenomenon?

Chinese lanterns filled with swamp gas?

We'll never know until we do, for now I'd suggest keeping eyes on the skies.

It’s the butt hole of the universe pointing straight on earth. Go figure.

from that article:

second floor of a Chinese Long March 2 C rocket, which took off June 18 at 06 h25 UTC from Xichang launch center,

After completing its mission, the floor would have expelled his fuel (from UDMH and nitrogen peroxide) to passivate, i.e. avoiding it exploding into orbit due to the residual pressure in the tanks.

THat's exactly why I wondered about this. However the launch of missles does the same and also checks out. But before they were around it sure does make the mind wonder what they were painting without telescopes to see the spirals of galaxies.
