A few little tid bits

Widjojono said the submarine has the capability to dive up to 500 meters below sea level, but authorities estimate it went 100-200 meters below that depth.

Margono said the navy also found one object floating in the depth of 50-100 meters that was magnetic, meaning it likely came from the sub.

Adm. Yudo Margono, chief of staff of the Indonesian Navy, said at a news conference Thursday that the vessel has sufficient oxygen for all the submariners until Saturday at 3 a.m. local time.

Fingers crossed for the crew.

I can't imagine many circumstances so terrifying.

The US is sending airborne assets to assist with the search, as well as meeting with the government to see what other assistance can be provided. There are currently three subs, five planes, and 21 ships involved, with more on the way from Singapore and Malaysia.

The search area has been narrowed to around where the oil slick was found. The warship Riguel was expected in the area today to use sonar to search for anything.

Bad news today.

Indonesian submarine declared sunk, no hope of survivors

Indonesia's navy declared Saturday that the missing submarine has most likely sunk, with no hope of finding survivors, after rescuers discovered several items believed to be from the vessel.

"With authentic evidence we found believe to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the 'sub miss' phase to 'sub sunk,'" Margono said at a press conference in Bali, where the found items were displayed.

The items included parts of a torpedo straightener, a grease bottle believed to be used to oil the periscope and prayer rugs from the submarine. Officials said the oxygen supply for its 53 crew ran out early Saturday.

I think this is the outcome most suspected but there was still much hope for a rescue. RIP, sailors.

If they are finding stuff from the crew the sub blew up and didnt get crushed at depth. Wonder what caused that had to have been a mishap with a torpedo.

But they also say they ran out of oxygen? Or would have run out of oxygen?

They were expected to run out of oxygen yesterday morning local time, if the sub had any air tight compartments.

What would be the chances of that sub conducting a torpedo test whilst it was being stalked/hunted by a foreign Sub. The foreign sub picks up on sonar a fish in the water and retaliates. Would they admit to it being a mistake?.

Unless the other sub was in exactly the wrong position, and totally missed them preparing the torpedo to launch, they wouldn't immediately retaliate. It would take an amazing chain of events for that to happen.

No Navy worth half a damn, which is 99% of navies, aren't going to put someone in charge that's going to shoot without a damn good reason, in charge of a sub. If you're stalking a sub to see what they're doing, you're behind them. So unless they were testing rear facing tubes, any torpedo would be fired away from them, in the wrong direction.

How would they be able to tell if someone was preparing the torpedo to launch?. What would they be listening for?.

Since all those prayer rugs and other material somehow floated up to the surface. I would guess they were sunk by another enemy. Or had an explosive accident.

Who would attack Indonesia? Maybe China?

If there are items found, especially items contained WITHIN the Sub, then something happened that resulted in those items being "removed" from the sub internally to externally, be it by hand, implosiom, explosion, a hole....

Any information on potential causes? Has anything even surfaced?

If you're listening carefully, and depending on the sub, you can hear the tube being flooded, as well as the doors opening as they prepare to launch them. Anyone that's stalking another sub is going to be listening very carefully, and these subs are old enough they should create a fair bit of noise.

They were out on a torpedo drill, that included firing a torpedo. Most likely, something went wrong with either the torpedo they launched, or another one on the boat.

Surely they wouldn't use a hot torpedo as a test unless they were aiming at a target vessel?. Don't they have Dummy fish?

It depends on what the test was. But they almost certainly would have had other, live, torpedoes on board. They almost always do, unless they're on something like builder's trials, or first sail after major yard work.
