So what happens when a person is strung out on heroin and they are driving and pass out at the wheel and kill me? Am I going to magically come back to life?

Junkies do all kind of stupid sh!t, not just a little theft.

I'm looking forward to the LA/San Fran/Portland level problems of junkies in the streets crapping everywhere and leaving their used needles everywhere. It just wasn't fair for the East Coast to be so far behind those times.

I think Baltimore also needs the outbreaks of medieval disease that sort of issue brings with it too. They certainly have the rats to help spread it all around.

Nothing encourages a young mind more towards education than a government doing nothing for education but providing free heroin injection centers.

This new policy will allow boundless opportunity for people that WOULD HAVE been convicted and disqualified from things like medical school and other great professions 😃

Clearly, no one worries about aborting the next Albert Einstein' they simply worry about incarcerating him.

The only individuals getting punished in Baltimore are those that are unborn.

I don't know how it is now, but when I was in elementary school in the 80s, they did show us a presentation with slides that included photos of people who had died from overdose. It was pretty shocking to me and gross.

Houston is not doing much better. Our mayor decided several months ago that any theft offence less than $750.00 in value would only result in a citation. I don't know about you guys, but that's a lot of money to me.

No. What I'm saying is that threat of prison does not reduce drug use.

impossible to quantify.
if we see drug use skyrocket cuz lack of potential criminal punishment, we'll know it was a bad idea.

I don't doubt that many addicts disregard prison, but I have to believe the consequence keeps some people clean.

if threat of prison saves one person from drugs, is it worth it?

It's great for business! How many businesses will close over asset loss?

10% for the Big Guy!

And we all know how Hunter needs to keep his habit going. Did we think that China was the only player in the pot?

From what I have heard and read over the past few years , they stopped prosecuting crime some time ago .

The stopping prosecuting crime started from the top down. Prosecuting crime from the bottom up is hypocritical, to say the least.

Let's be fair Baltimore has a lot bigger problems than low level drug crimes and prostitution. The fact that they're actually seeing a drop in violent crime is huge if it can be tied to this initiative.

This is a trend we've seen in a number of cases, namely Portugal. When they legalized all drugs violent crimes dropped significantly. In the end isn't the violence associated with the drug trade the major reason police still go after drug crimes?

I've been saying take the brakes off and let anyone use anything they want however they want, but no free rehab or any of that nonsense. You get addicted and ruin your life or OD and die sorry thats on you.

Bet you in 10 years the drug problem sorts itself naturally. Those who can't handle themselves will die out and newer generations will learn watching them die out pitifully.

RickyD, I have been saying this very thing for years.

I'm just addressing the average kid type situation.

I'm just speaking from experience.

I was exposed to all kinds of "don't do it" stuff. It didn't take. I did stuff.
Turns out I'm not an addict though. Luck of the draw, or something. But the attempts at causing me to avoid that first hit didn't work. It don't work. It's what happens after that, when someone actually needs help, that matters. And the threat of prison doesn't.

I don't object to intervention and assistance but even that can become a failed venture that should have it's limits. Prison time is, mostly, a failed attempt to intervene and even continued attempts of this sort are not worth the returns.
Medical intervention is definitely preferable but after the first 2 attempts end in failure, that individual should be considered lost to intervention and left to their own resources... Society has no further responsibility toward an individual than this. Ones that defies help are not salvageable.

Both minor and major crimes declined greatly in NYC after Giuliani instituted zero tolerance-policing, though academics naturally credit other factors. Even the far-left Guardian admitted overall crime fell 57 percent during Giuliani's eight years in office and murder by 65 percent.
