Eyewitness Testimony

Ok, so, you'll just have to follow along for a moment. Take a ride on this train of thought.

I just watched a serious optical illusion. The David's, Copperfield nor Blaine had anything to do with this.

It was in a hockey game, Caps at Pens. Dude totally didn't score a goal. From all angles it went off the crossbar and out. Clear no-goal, right?

Then they found another angle and it clearly went off the camera in the back of the goal, about two feet from where the crossbar is. I swear for a few minutes while they reviewed it I was sure it was NOT a goal.

So what does this, pray tell, have to do with eyewitness testimony, you are asking yourself. I think it's quite a lot.

What we see is not always the truth. No matter how many cameras around our eyes can always deceive us and those cameras can also deceive us.

As the saying goes....um, dammit, I can't remember. All I can say is I "saw" something and totally believed it to be real and it wasn't but there was no photoshop involved. This has me a wee bit scared of my own judgement concerning photos and video. I was SURE about what I saw and I was 100% wrong.

This was a live game, no time for anyone to bugger with the video, this is not a conspiracy. It just happened so I can't link any video of it. It will show up shortly. I've always questioned what I saw/heard/think I know of certain wild or volatile situations because memory is, well, not totally reliable.

I was 100% sure of what I saw. I was proved wrong.

It's important that we know how easily we can be fooled by our senses and possibly more important to understand that we can deny it. Now, with ''deep fake'' facing us and it's promise of becoming even more deceptive, learning to take the time to evaluate our actions and beliefs prior to judgment on reality as we think we have just seen or heard is paramount.

Yeah, I say things all the time. If the Circle Of The Black Thorns (Look up Angel, Season 5) want to go after me for revealing, well, very little, then they can have a go at it. Have a day, really. They can confiscate all my Iron Maiden albums, cd's, picture discs, cassettes, downloads, dvd's, blurays, posters, autographs and my book on the Franklin Scandal.

I might, however, have swapped this dimension for another. I'm thinking not as I'm not the only one who "saw" this. This is not fake news.

Serious question there. I saw what I saw and I was totally, completely, beyond a shadow of a doubt,100% WRONG! I'm kinda freaking out about it.

Like the David Blaine show where he was walking up the side of a casino here, that's illusion and I know it. Created over months or years of practice. This was just a random hockey game.

I think I need a little break of some sort. I've known for years not to trust what I see as "truth" but this makes me feel like my eyes are a little bit more wide open. To see something and think you are more than right and to find out you are completely wrong, within a matter of minutes, is, well, rather eye opening.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is not your eyes that deceive you, it is your brain.

Your eyes only report what you look at, your brain receives the signal and images then deciphers the information.

I have a congenital eye impairment that makes me prefer to see thing in the negative. This creates no problem for me if I "know" what I am looking at. If the object is not familiar to me, my brain flips through my mental image storage, in nano seconds, until it finds an mental image of something that is close enough to what I am seeing. It is sometimes wrong.

When it is wrong, my brain picks up on that and goes, "What the heck?!" "That can't be right!" I then usually have to get closer and grab a different angle, before it becomes clear what I am actually seeing. If it is something happening fast, then I just have to go with my brain's best guess.

All that to tell you, don't blame the eyes, and don't be too hard on your brain. They are both doing the best they can with what they have to work with.
