Secure Website and PII?????

So this morning I had to fill out a very long and detailed questionnaire about my personal medical history on a completely secure website with all sorts of PII assurances. Also this morning I had to renew a prescription I get filled online, also on a verified and secure website. When I was done with each of these tasks I logged out of the respective "secure" websites and shut my browser down, then restarted.

About a half an hour ago I went to Youtube to see what was going on. Suddenly my YT suggested videos are full of videos about drugs and or procedures I currently take or have in the past.

WTF??? Is nothing sacred?

How the hell did that information get out so fast? Even if one of the companies was selling data it couldn't have gotten out that fast, so the data must have been obtained some other way.

You got tagged by cookies for retargetting. The website you used with have a privacy policy telling you what they can do with your info and who/what they can share.

To me that doesn't seem so secure. But I could be wrong.

It’s aimed at tailored living.

Life can be really simple if you allow the inter web to produce constant recommendations.

If not, clear your cookies or set your own limits of allowable shared data on entry to a site.

Also, if you stay signed into google while you browse, or clicked into the site where you filled out the pII from a google search or did it on a phone while signed into google, these will all give google more than enough info to feed you related ads.

I have all the ad personalization and other history stuff turned off for my google account, it helps but I still get some targetted ads.

What browser do you use? Chrome is a Google browser so don't trust it.

I find Opera to be the best. If I'm doing anything sensitive, I always launch a private window. I'm sure that's not foolproof but it helps. At least cookies get wiped when you close the window.

Firefox, and I've got it locked down as tight as I can get it without it blowing up every site I go to, like here, etc.

Cookies blocked, deny or ask on everything, etc.

I've never understood why it was okay to condition the population that your personal information is anything but.

That there a literally individuals making money off your information, but those who may even be facing evictions from lockdowns and etc. don't see a dime from royalties.

We've been robbed daily since the invention of the internet and just like banks being closed on weekends, it's been conditioned "that's just the way things are."

Or even better, it's been the smoking gun for

"You'll own nothing and love it."

Could be as simple as selective attention bias mixed with some tracking cookies.

Even if you don't sign in anywhere, the websites that you visit can use various clues—your IP address, your device type, your browser—to figure out who you might be, and to tie this to other information that might already be associated with you.

The "cookies" you picked up do not identify you in any way.
Not your system , not you , nothing.

Now , learn to clear all history , including cookies , right before you close the browser when doing such.
Then close and reopen browser to do "normal " stuff .

Even a VPN won't afford much protection. Try Tor...

There is a secure operating system called "Tails" based on Linux, but fairly easy to use, that you can put on a flash drive. The idea is you can browse and do most things, with security and without leaving traces.

It uses things like TOR and other stuff so you don't leave footprints.

Give it a try. Can't hurt.

You can carry it with you and even use someone else's PC, without stuffing anyone's setup and without leaving a trace.

Try using Firefox and install Ghostery, block everything and go from there. If you feel adventurous and want to see how much crap is interconnected, try Lightbeam. Just don't leave it running too long, otherwise there will be so many connections it will slow your system down monitoring them. Try Lightbeam with and without Ghostery running, the difference will shock you. Once you see how bad it can be, go to tails.boum.org and download Tails, which runs through the Tor network ;-)
