Europe is almost totally Socialist with the one exception being Switzerland.

The EU, and all its previous incarnations, were designed to facilitate trade between member states.

It reached fruition thanks to Margaret Thatcher pushing for the Single Market in the mid 80s.

However, the left in Europe was concerned that this was giving too much power to international capital so they pushed for social protections.

And that's the EU in a nutshell before Maastricht - the right are happy because it helps business but unhappy because it protects workers; the left are happy because it protects workers but unhappy because it helps business.

Oh, and Switzerland isn't in the EU.

And the Hungarian and Polish governments would be very amused to hear they are socialist.

Most European nations are not socialist. The Spanish government is outright socialist. Most governments in Europe are market friendly and follow welfarist policies that can't only exist in market economies.

That protectionist approach is still strong. I personally think the EU is going nowhere as long as Germany has a strong economy. If the EU sinks we're probably all suffering catastrophic flooding.

Hard to imagine people choosing less rights and protections isn't it? As I said they've been good towards individuals but good on paper isn't necessarily good in practice. I could write for days on the failings of the EU... I honestly reckoned we could do better I mean its not like we haven't got ties to Europe without it, the opposite actually. We've got ties that make the EU look like a youth club.

Politically speaking though I don't think we have the willpower to be greater than that we leave, I hope that's just covid and a lack of seeing action. We need grassroots action and the people demanding better and working towards such outcomes.

Yeah they didn't achieve much more than Israeli witch hunts and condemning the communist in chief.

Yeah... Off my meds, with hindsight I know I was dreaming. I trusted non of them but I also didn't imagine the tories to still be at the helm.

I'd like to see those indicators.

As a Bloc they're bound to be financially better off but as a Union disharmony is rife among the smaller and Eastern European members , recently Poland said it may leave the Union over proposed EU judicial reforms , if you start removing cards the house will fall , we're the first card to leave the EU house of cards and I doubt we will be the last so I wouldn't be so sure it isn't facing demise.
