Why did they think the earth was flat ?

It's a common misconception.

The ancient Greek philosophers like Pythagoras, Eratosthenes, Plato, and Aristotle proposed the idea of a spherical Earth based on observations and reasoning as far back as the third century BCE.

Like I said in many posts addressing flat earthers the ancient civilizations relied a lot on the power of observation so on a full moon the could clearly see its spherical shape and make reasonable conclusions about the shape of this planet.

What is the purpose of posting a passage from a page on twitter that doesn't say anything other than nonsense as usual.

What is this obsession with flat earth or in other threads people who believe in the creationist nonsense pushed by individuals who struggle with grade9 science.

Take a look at a full moon and use the power of observation and your eyes to understand the shape of planets. How does the moon look like? Is it flat? Triangular? A cone? Maybe a cylinder?

I can't see how anyone could assume that, except for folks that need to believe in stories, so they make leap-of-faith assumptions.

Holding a Hockey-puck in the light, in the right way, could also project a round shadow.

But that's inconvenient to " Scientists ", trying to guess their way to objective understanding.

For those that still believe everything their grade-2 teacher told them : I've got some bad news about, well, everything.

At some point the earth would have to cast a bar like shadow on the moon instead of a round shadow during a lunar eclipse. With there being no real explanation for a lunar eclipse in the flat earth “model”.

Anyone is free to believe that they are on a rotating Hockey-puck, a non-rotating Hockey-puck, or a piece of rock hurtling hundreds of thousands of mph through " space ".

At the end of the day : if it's not from our own personal experience, it's a story that we heard from someone else.

Doesn't anyone get what I mean by stories ?

I was told a story, about a globe Earth, just like most.
But when some other stories started crumbling, then why not investigate the stories ?

Some of these stories are from blatant liars, yet so many still cling to them.

Space, the planets, the luminaries, the macrocosm, all of these are not what we are told.

When one gets old enough, we start to notice how often they change the ahem " scientific-info ".
Apparently, the longer we look, the older the universe gets.
Seems to me it's about time for the baffled scientists to just throw their arms up, and admit that they were guessing all along.

It's called progress and the expansion of scientific knowledge as opposed to a dogmatic "belief" system rooted in the past, unwilling to accept that things move on.

Science does not claim to be omnipotent, it is still seeking answers to the as yet unknown.

That's kind of how science works. Observe evidence, postulate a "best guess." Other's evaluate that "best guess," and agree until better evidence comes along.

The longer we can see into the universe, like we can with the James Webb telescope, the older the universe gets.

Why do you find this odd?

Agreed that is a good summary of the scientific method.
I agree that the scientific-method, is among our very best tools, to help us understand the physical universe.

What I mean by stories : is the things that you cannot absolutely prove for your own gnosis.

If one has not been outside of Earth, and had a clear, unobscured view, to view the Earth as a spheroid : then they are relying on somebody else's opinion, otherwise known as a story.

Another story that changes regularly, is the depth of the oceans.
They are stories, because somebody else, some supposed scientist, or influencer, tells us what they say it is, then we repeat that, just like we have learned something.

All we have learned : is a story.

If somebody says that they have a blue car : how do you know if that is true, or a untrue ?
Until you see the car : it's a story.

Then again : I used to have an oddly coloured car, that some called blue, and other swore it was green, LoL !

Then we get into the whole : " perception " thingy.

As to this one story never having crumbled, I care to disagree sir, as you have seen over the years, multiple 100 + page threads questioning it.

Other than what may be to some, obvious larks : there are some that just question everything.
