maybe fast connectivity isn't needed for world wide surveillance especially if there are enough of them up there.

Dial up speeds? Dial up was 28.8k-56k, So 1mb connection was over 30 times faster than dial up. These starlink speeds are over 5,000 times faster than Dial up, and the OP's 2-4mb connection over LTE is 300-500 practical times faster than dial up. 2-4 mbs connections are certified broadband speeds.

Most of the rural United States struggles to hit 2mb/s connections. Don't take your 100mb/s connections for granted, most people don't have them. I refuse to live anywhere that doesn't.

Sounds similar to our speeds in rural Canada.
Some places would be lucky to have that even.

I'm looking forward to it. I signed up for the beta awhile back.

56k Modems were the next big thing and cable internet around the corner.

My first internet plan with Time Warner (Formally Paragon Cable now Spectrum) was 6 Mbs DL 1.2 Mbs UP, it was also during the advent releases of both Xbox Live and Playstation network that really helped in cable internet expansion.
At the time, 6Mbs internet was blistering fast.

Nowadays, I'm paying $80 a month for 115mbps DL/15Mbps UP, ZERO data cap, Cable based.

$80? Jesus Christ.

here in Poland you can get 100mbps fiber with added tv and voip phone for $30. no data cap either.

Good God, I was totally exaggerating about dial-up. But I guess that is hard to tell sarcasm in written text as well as being an intellectual hurdle for some. But so what, I could care less what most "know it all" types think and God know we got them here.

I'll be in slightly rural SC, there's AT&T fiber on the road, but they apparently don't want my money. I've tried several times to get someone out to the build site and price out what a fiber to the home run would cost me. Have cash in hand, just can't get anyone to come take a look and give me a price.

That's what we have here in Anchorage, unless you go for slow DSL. I have the $100 plan now and when I've tested the speed, it's generally close to 200. Using it for home and work, I never go over 400 GB.

Most populated areas in Alaska have cable and the cable company has Internet service in to most villages. No idea what speeds they get. You get north of Anchorage and I don't think satellite is a thing yet. Too far north.

When I lived in Oklahoma in the farm belt they had fiber running right on the other side of the road. Never could get them to price me to get into it. They had a fiber junction 100 feet away from my place. At the time I would have paid for a fiber run but they were not interested like you were saying.

It will be interesting to see what Kuiper from Amazon will do as far as their 3,236 satellite constellation. Like this article says Amazon has an infrastructure that will give them certain advantages over StarLink.

Yes sir you are correct. My first modem was on an Osborne 1 with an internal 300 baud, rotfl! I had a "internet"ish map poster on my wall with most known public "networks", mostly schools but also bbs. Wish I still had it it was about 8ft x 8ft. My K.E.R.M.I.T binder was 1500 pages. Good times. Got my Osborne 1 when i was six. It at the time was a large version of Penny's computer book from inspector gadget. ROTFL! These kids have no clue about whats inside the box, at least that is the very nicest way to say it
