It’s spicy, full of cabbage, garlic and ginger, and apparently it fights off a strain of the bird flu.
Researchers at Seoul National University claim a dish called kimchi (top left), which is a staple of Korean cuisine, may help chickens fight off the H9N2 virus – a strain of the avain flu that hasn’t been transmitted to humans.
Scientists removed a culture fluid from the zesty recipe and fed it to 13 chickens that were infected with H9N2, bronchitis and Newcastle disease – a week later, 11 of the sick birds had recovered. The experts gave 13 other chickens fluids without the kimchi and six of them died.
After the results of the study were released this week, some South Koreans were sweating up a storm and eating more of the fiery cuisine, but scientists warn the results aren’t absolute, as they only tested a small number of animals.
