do you get the same results if you clear your cache and cookies, and browse anonymously.

Mathematically that isn't too unlikely... those articles are written at random times, and one would expect them to be random and eventually fill up most number combinations.

This is some of the weirdest sh!t I've seen in a while - type any 3 (or more) digit number into google followed by "new cases" and the results will show that exact number in some article linked to Covid.

WTF??

I just did it, and the only thing I used was "new cases". Same results: all Covid 19 articles. The keyword is "new cases" and comes up higher in searches based on the number of times it has been searched for. Algorithms and such...nothing odd about this imo

What I got this morning. My guess would be that the number area is a placeholder, and the variable is being filled by some external third party through an API, and that this server was briefly unresponsive or maybe that my VPN didn't like the off-site #ery. It makes me wonder who's putting together the numbers. In China, this was a game publisher that I'm somewhat familiar with, and they screwed up and accidentally pulled the real numbers...something that makes me think they had government PR people handling the published numbers, not scientists. Are we doing the same?

Edit: sorry, it's so huge (hehehe that's what she said), is there a way to set a pixel size in the pic tag?

Almost certainly!

And I had the same GTA V news in my Google Feed this morning too.

That was an excellent "that's what she said" joke, don't act like you didn't see it.
