Duck Duck Dinner MUL2020 non-writer


I enter this contest to tell a story,
half real, half invented,
don't you worry,
if you reach the pun,
you won't be sorry.

Last year I planned a herbal garden,
and among a few things, it was about thyme.
Being the garden warden,
I stuck a sign:
"No slugs in here, it's considered crime,
no in and out, no dinner time!"

Triumph in mind I left the scene,
a sign will help, it's not a spleen,
cause slugs in general, from what I have seen,
can not read but aren't mean.

Next day I see the sign was gone,
all the plants had holes,
that didn't took long!
I thought about it until dawn:
what the hell was going on?

In the middle of the night,
a repeating pound,
what is there outside,
producing this nocturnal sound?

I flip the lights and what do I see?
The duck that stalks me wherever I'll be.
On the road, in parks, out on the sea,
now sitting on my porch grinning in glee.

With fists up in the air,
running outside but it was not there!
I squint my eyes and spot it where?
Sitting in my garden, giving me the stare.

Full in rage I charge at it,
dinner in mind,
-with thyme and chopstick.
Next thing I know I become awake,
the sign next to me telling me that:

"We noticed your trap,
you dumb goose,
with the sign and thyme,
so we pulled it loose,
you think we're stupid, that's not fine!

From now on,
we reign the garden,
surrender,
and stop playing the warden!"

Days went on,
the grass grew high,
ducks cannibalized themselves,
fighting about their piece of pie.

And in the end, who had guessed?
I got my dinner and some rest.

Now this is not why I have this name,
there were really ducks on my porch,
everyday the same.
I think a farm has lost a few,
but there are lots of parallels to the real world,
you noticed that, too?
