Pinera’s administration is grappling with the virus following a period of social upheaval against inequality and poor government services that started last October. Pinera initially called in troops to quell last year’s unrest before agreeing to measures including a plebiscite on a new constitution.

I know this will never happen in America. We have too many guns and the government knows we will hang them all if we start starving. Too bad Chile doesn't have an armed populace.
You'll hang them, with your guns?
What if they shoot back? I mean, them and their armies?
The armies of combat trained citizens?
You think the US army would follow orders to fire on their own families?
Some might, but they'd quickly be torn to shreds by the rest of the military men.
Just like your local cops, when things get bad, people will defend them and theirs over all else.

they will cower in fear of our black scary rifles, just as your government did.

If you gave a piano to UPS and told them to deliver it to a monks cave in Tibet , it would get there. I don't see how aid can't be sent to them just like if there was a natural disaster. I think some food shortages have political agendas.
There are a little more than 2.2 million active and reserve personnel in the armed forces of the United States.

Finally, U.S. armed forces members are all volunteers. I can’t imagine them blindly obeying an order to shoot their fellow Americans. Now if they were under attack or innocent civilians were being attacked, I can imagine them using lethal force on Americans.
But don’t think for a minute that the U.S. military could easily intimidate or subdue America’s civilian population. It would have to use measures it won’t even use against Islamic State or the Taliban, like indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas with no regard for collateral damage.
Some billionaire could work out a solution to get the goods to the people in need. They would be the world's heroes. They have the means. It hurts my soul.
I’m saying the U.S. military can’t possibly defeat the people of the United States, not that I’d expect the armed forces to attempt something that hopeless. Those bombs, machine guns, drones and artillery you mention are almost entirely made in the United States. The feds would have to convince or coerce the factory workers to continue making them, and find a way to get them to the troops. And food producers would have to be willing to sell to the feds and truckers would have to deliver the food. Trains are vulnerable to sabotage, and railroad workers would have to be willing to operate them. I just don’t see how the feds could subdue the entire nation. And I don’t think most of the soldiers, Marines and airmen would be willing to wage war on fellow Americans unless they were directly threatening them or innocent people.

They've done it before, opening fire on citizens. Some of them unarmed.
They'd use bombs, machine guns, drones, and artillery.
