I'm not sure why so many people want to make Groom Lake into something it is not. The government publicly admitted the existence of the base while it was being built in 1955. During the 1960s and 1970s it appeared on unclassified maps clearly labeled as "Area 51." The CIA declassified their association with Area 51 in 2010, a little over three decades after transferring responsibility for the base to the Air Force.

Today, there are approximately 2,500 people working there, mostly government contractors. They are responsible for conducting thousands of ground and flight tests annually in support of 50 to 80 different HQ USAF, DoD, SECDEF, and Presidentially directed programs on a budget upward of $500 million. The Groom Lake base and associated range facilities constitute something on the order of $3.5 billion in assets. There are no underground hangars or other such nonsense. No extraterrestrial beings or spacecraft. Just airplanes and weapon systems.

It's unique bit of American folklore, as well as nice long runway in the middle of nowhere to test and land multistage vehicles that come in as hot as the shuttle. I am guessing.

The new age successor of the successor of The SR-71. And as long as China exists so will a need to built better toys than freinemy states. There's even another new hanger south of the other larger newer hanger.

So still growing..

Used to live by a place that had high power lines just end and go into the ground. It was a small fenced in area with just a garage. Always wondered what was going on

Probably the place where power lines go underground or a transmission hut.

HangEr is for clothEs.

HangAr is for Aircraft.

(Easy to remember from the E in the word 'clothEs' and the 'A' for 'Aircraft')

It's difficult to take seriously anything someone says, when they can't realize the difference between a simple utility to hang clothes and a massive airplane hall.

Why ANYONE makes this mistake, is baffling to me. They are completely different words. You wouldn't make a mistake between 'door' and 'deer', so why 'hangar' and 'hanger'?
