At the scheduled Wednesday coronavirus briefing, President Donald Trump and other officials in his administration opened by addressing a seemingly unrelated topic: a new campaign against drug cartels.
They said traffickers planned to take advantage of the global COVID-19 crisis.
“As governments and nations focus on the coronavirus, there’s a growing threat that cartels, criminals, terrorists and other malign actors will try to exploit the situation for their own gain,” Trump said. “We must not let that happen.”
It was prompted by intelligence indicating drug cartels “were going to try to take advantage of the situation and try to infiltrate additional drugs into our country,” said Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“We are at war with COVID-19, we are at war with terrorists, and we are war with the drug cartels,” Milley said. “You will not penetrate this country.”

Something very serious is going on,
Couldn't we just talk about what's coming down the pike
As I watch the military officials speak, my instincts were telling me this is a cover story to placate the masses.

It isn't so much what was said, it was more what wasn't said. I'm not buying their 'war on drugs' line one bit.
Was wondering too, there is something much bigger going on. This presser was all too military brass and top attorney all looking tense behind the President.
I have always said since this whole lock down started that there is something else besides a virus.
Trump is going to do what should have been done decades ago. He is going to have the US military take on the Cartels.

They will soon be cut off by land, air, and sea.

So we're sending our military into sovereign nations to fight cartels?

Maybe they are expecting serious retaliation, and that's where the heightened sense of tension came from. I don't know much about South American armies, or who backs them, but I got a 'Bay of Pigs' feeling. ( Yes, I'm old enough to remember... )

I don't think so. As I said, something else is going on. I take it you didn't bother to watch the video and hear them speak?

Did you watch the video? I'm pretty good at 'reading' people- and they all seemed like they were ready to do battle.
But you're right; it could just as easily be exactly what they say it is.

Care to share with the rest of the class? You, of all posters, most certainly have a working theory you haven't piped up about yet. (that's actually a minor compliment, Xuen)
