Iran state television has reported that three British naval boats it seized last year as a result of a border dispute in the Shatt al-Arab waterway, will be displayed on Iran's New Year holidays. The Iranian new year and celebrations commence on March 21. The report states that the boats will be displayed on the banks of the Shatt al-Arab waterway.

The families of Iranians killed in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war often visit the worst-affected border regions during the New Year holidays to pay their respects to the dead.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized the three British patrol boasts, which were being delivered to Iraqi police, in the Shatt al-Arab last June and arrested eight British servicemen aboard.

The men were released after three days but their boats and equipment, including weapons and navigational gear, were kept.

The fact that Iran is planning to go ahead with this to coincide with Iran's new year, and place these boats in a sensitive area to families who come to mourn loved ones lost during the Iran-Iraq war is more provocation to 'the West', in my opinion.

Did they not give them back then! Thieving monkeys!
Not as if they would contain too much sensitive material mind you, being only fast attack boats, but still, would be nice if we could have them back! The MOD isn't that flush with cash!!

They where meant for the Iraqi's, nice to see the Iranians feel for their brothers across the way!

This is completely pathetic, do they not have any political maturity at all. It just shows what kind of Government they are to use a situation like this to promote there position in world politics.

I am just as bad replying to such a thread that promotes their infantile propaganda.

Iran 'will keep' UK naval boats

"Iran will not give back the three British naval boats seized in the Shatt al-Arab and is putting them on display," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Mirfaisal Baqerzadeh, described as a senior Chief Staff of Armed Forces official, as saying.

"For the same reasons we did not give back the American helicopters, we won't give back the aggressive British naval boats," Baqerzadeh said.

He was referring to US military helicopters which crashed and were abandoned during a failed 1980 attempt to rescue 52 hostages held at the US embassy in Tehran. The hostages were eventually released after being held for 444 days.
