OLEDs(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) have been steadily evolving over the course of the last couple of years. Recent breakthroughs have allowed many products to be designed that were previously thought of as being extremely hard to do because of OLEDs inherent problems. These being the degradation over a small amount of time due to oxidation of the screens, which lowers the life-time considerably and the lack of sufficient luminence. Luckily many of these companies pioneering OLEDs have found partners who can supply them with answers to some, if not all these problems.

For instance, Universal Display has partnered with a company that can provide an incapsulation technology that is both able to hermetically seal the OLED display, but also be flexible. Flexibility is a key attribute in many future OLED based products, like a rollable display/computer. Who wouldn't want to be able to fold up his or her computer and put it in there pocket instead of having to lug around the current generation of laptops.

The problem of brightness, has been almost figured out. The engineers have been refining their processes, again and again and will eventually allow for OLEDs to be far more efficient that any lighting source currently on the market, with an ratio of input of electricity/ to output of light higher, probably in the neighborhood of >18 lm/watt. This type of OLED, called a White OLED will make a great diffuse lighting system, with normal LEDs for point lighting.

In addition to normal OLEDs, Universal Display's TOLED(top-emitting), PHOLED(phosphorescent) and FOLED(foldable), will make a great impact on the future market of display technology. A technology that will be far clearer, brighter and smaller then todays displays.

Inaddition to Universal Display, Cambridge Display Technology has a slightly different, but easily as disruptive PLED technology, and there are other companies coming on to the scene. The future of displays is going to be incredible, and I am personally excited by the way it will effect my computer. Who doesn't want a 50"+ Hi-def screen to play and work on?

The future of displays is foldable!

Thats what i was think of when i posted something on the holographic thread i beleive a couple days ago, maybe a week. and i couldnt think of the name or who made it nor could i find it, so nice find. And by the way, i did find this thing sweet., i like how they may use it in a soldiers helmet and stuff for like a map and other stuff.

Lol... sorry about that! I thought I would dig into the collection of companies that I have been following for years and post them up on the site, so people can see what is going on in the world of displays. I have many bookmarked and ALL are interesting, but which display is going to win out?

The answer depends on a few factors, it has to be cheap to produce, it has to have a long life-time, it has to have a richer color depth and high resolution, and it has to be thinner, essentially anything that doesn't meet those criterion will probably not make it. I know of about 3 companies that meet that specific criterion, however they may have intrinsic properties that a few niche markets may allow, but the big fish, i.e. mainstream is going to need those factors.

I like this setup display:

I expect the actual frame to be smaller when it actually comes out(hopefully it will be smaller...), or composed of a clear case.

I love future technology posts. I'm a frequent visitor to gizmodo.com as well as i4u.com I too have been following OLEDs and awaiting their market arrival.

Edit: Sigma can you list some of those sites please? I'd love to have a look. Thanks

Sure! Here is a list:

www.universaldisplay.com...
www.iridigm.com...
www.cdtltd.co.uk...
www.holofx.com...
www.holotouch.com...
colossalstorage.net...
www.io2technology.com...
www.mvis.com...
www.pelikon.com...

Then you have the big players like Kodak, Sony, etc. with their own OLED programs. I believe most of the companies listed here can coexist peacefully, but some are definently going to overlap.

OLEDs are neat but are pretty pricey atm. My personal favorite is Carbon Nanotube Field Emission Displays(CNTFED). Another competitor is iFire, here is the website. They say thier manufacturing methods are 30-50 % cheaper then LCD and Plasma.
