TA-ANALYSIS: Thieves Steal Over 1000 Blank Driver's Licenses

Theives in Las Vegas stole about 1,700 blank driver's licenses from a Nevada State office. Also stolen were the laminate sheets used and supplies used to make state driver's licenses. Authorities do not appear to have any leads on the suspects yet, but dismiss the thought of this being a security risk.



Driver's licenses are used for almost everything. You can open a bank account, or write a check. Since we don't have any thing aside from the picture to validate that the owner is who they say they are, the theives can stamp out complety valid identification for themselves or anyone they choose. Of course the list of possible clients would include terrorist who may wish to have these to gain access to sensitive places, or get a job in a sensitive area. How many employees actually run the number through to validate that it is correct? Even if they do, the theives could simply pick a valid number and add in their own information to go along with it. Pretty scary that we still use a picture of ourself to validate who we are.

This is an example of sheer negligence, in my opinion. There should have been security measures on the order of a banking institution. I fear that such an incident could happen here, now that the issuance of drivers' licenses has been privatized. Locking this stuff in a file cabinet is not enough.

Wow! You mean that you can apply to become a driver's license center? Right they should have had quite a bit more protection that just locking them in an ordinary cabinet. The real question is what do they plan to do with these? It can't be good.

With luck they will be sold to teenagers who want to buy alcohol. With a little less luck, they will wind up in the hands of terrorists.

Funny I looked into it and you were right. There are a lot of driver's liscense locations, and you can find out thier location and hours of operation on Nevad's Department of Motor Vehicle website. www.dmvnv.com... Now lets see. Where is a good location near me to steal offical documents from. O! Here's one that's 5 miles away and only open mon - fri. That means I'll have the whole weekend to browse through their building on my own if I chose to do so.

Inside job, knew 'exactly' where they were. In, out, done. This wasn't frat boys I would think, or kids. They make fake ID's with pc's. I would think organized crime before terrorism.After all, it is Las Vegas.

On another hand,
this could be a orchestrated ploy to put out (RFID tracable)
Official Identification Documents ...for the ongoing purpose
of tracking the 'undergrounds' ability to circulate fake IDs
and even make a demographic of the end-users...
be they illeagle aliens, excapees, bail jumpers, fugitives, terrorists....

My guess is; more then likely done by a legal mexican immigrant so he could make id's for his illegal friends living in Mexico.

I'm not buying it...although wouldn't this be another reason for thumbscanning and RFID?

all I can say is that that is one time when whoops just doesn't do the situation any justice.

This is good news to hear just when the I.D./ and fraud have been going up over the past few yrs. I cannot help but marvel at the how loose the safegaurds that are supposed to be in effect to prevent something of this nature. I know here in Va. identity theft is skyrocketing out of control along with the crime rate. Just last week, police in Bototout County just a few miles North of me, busted a crime ring and they were going to local business' and pretending to inquire about employment. When inside the business, they would try to find where the bus. kept its payroll checks. They would break in later and steal them and go on a spending spree. Now are you ready for the kicker? These theives were illeagle Mexicans and wound up stealing over 25k. worth of goods and svcs. in our area and that was just from the above mentioned county. The county in which I reside in was also hit by these same people. Local govt. officials say in all, they have stolen around 100k.during the last few months. Am I the only one who thinks that the Mex. govt. is sending us the people from the bottom of their woodpile.?
