There's been some great info posted re: Prions in the past few months (soficrow
). I just came across this article in a Royal Society Journal.
Apparently, mice with a certain inflammatory condition accumulate prions in organs throughout their body. If the same holds true for cows, then
infected meat could easily enter the human food chain, despite the current 'safety measures' that are already in place.
It's a pretty scary thought... granted the mice were genetically engineered, but the prion accumulation outside of the nervous tissue is coincidental
with the presence of this inflammatory condition, not with the state of being genetically engineered only. This suggests that under stress, prions can
migrate from nervous/lymphatic tissues. Given the significant stress that factory farmed animals are under, the implications of this, IMO, are
staggering.
Makes me glad I've been a vegetarian for more than 15 years.... I'm probably still not safe though.
