Great topic OP, thank you for posting this. I am not a "sound guy" by any means, and am not super familiar with the process, or why digital and analog are so different. That being said I only buy vinyl, in fact, just two days ago I picked up the Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness for $95.00, and Rage Against the Machine Evil Empire for $35,00 The price alone should show that there is value to these things.

To me the biggest issue is the recording process. Because of digital, we now have the ability to be super lazy in the recording process. In fact, almost anyone could go into a studio these days and come out sounding good. The ability to cut, splice and layer 200 tracks is what is killing music. The greats of old had to be talented and do an entire track in one take. I think when people say "the human is take out of the music" this is what they're hearing. There should be mistakes on a recording, each chorus, verse, or bridge should sound a little different, but when they copy and paste, it's the exact same take just used over and over and kills the human element.

There is a great youtube video by Rick Beato on this topic www.youtube.com...
