The Wreck of the Japanese Imperial Navy Carrier Kaga has been found.

The Japanese Imperial Navy's WW2 era aircraft carrier IJN Kaga has been found. She was originally laid down as a battleship, had construction stopped and then she was rebuilt as a carrier. The IJN Kaga joined the Japanese Imperial Fleet in 1929, but was rebuilt. The IJN Kaga participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor and was later lost to the US Navy's attack at the Battle of Midway. She was killed by aircraft off the USS Enterprise, USS Hornet and USS Yorktown.

The late Paul Allen funded the effort to find the old warships. It seems the funding the deceased billionaire provided is still present for the immediate future. These are important historical finds and grave sights. They ought to be protected and studied.

Interesting timing of the find.

Midway hits theaters on November 8th..

It was without question the most decisive naval battle of the entire war. It turned the tide for the allies All thanks to those codebreakers that were able to decipher the Japanese intercepts to identify Midway island as the true target, and not the Aleutian Islands (which was the deception).

Yes it was. Based on some reading I did alot of it came down to poor damage control on the IJN's part which could have save 1-2 of the carriers. Nagumo's waffling on ground vs maritime strike did not help either.

One only has to look at the Yorktown to see the difference good damage control makes

Not only our ship's but all ship's from that period were and are being illegally salvaged, the fact is that since the detonation of the atomic bomb's all metal in the world has a trace amount of certain isotopes within it but these old ship's are made of metal that does not have that isotope and that make the metal very valuable for certain applications, even if that is not what the metal has been stolen - it is not really salvage as these sites are internationally recognized and protected as maritime graves - just the scrap value alone is enough for some people to undertake the illegal operation's.

Whenever a ship is discovered and it's location revealed it then becomes only a matter of a very short time before it is picked clean by these scavengers.

Even WW2 wreck's in the Atlantic may be vulnerable as some of these outfits are very well equipped and willing to travel, of course if they are detected then they will be arrested but in the pacific so much water, so much area and so many wreck's make it a far more daunting prospect to keep tabs on even the known wreck sites.

They found Akagi as well, but their ROV was damaged beyond their ability to repair on site so were unable to dive on her.

Today, they have posted video of a Fletcher class DD at Samar, likely DD-557 USS Johnston. No hull, just pieces, and the footage is staggering.
