Additionally, their ludicrous claims and militarisation of the South China Sea is expansionism in anyone’s book. You also have to consider if China has actually prevented open access to the waters in the region. And the fact that there has been piracy and murder between some of the other countries bordering on the area. Surely China, the largest trading user of the area, wants unrestricted free trade through the area.

Piracy and armed conflict in the area are contrary to the interests af all countries bordering on the South China Sea (Brunei, Indonesia, The Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam and even Borneo).

Granted that there are contested and limited resources in the area, too, such as fisheries, crude oil and natural gas but, since 2011, all local countries have contributed to an agreed procedure for resolving conflicts.

I see some claim of legitimacy in China being a major player in the region. I see absolutely no legitimacy for the US to cause conflict and have a say in what happens there. In 1974 the US gave China a promise that it would not interfere in parts of the South China Sea, a promise that was broken by later US governments.

Ostensibly the US participation and military forces were supposed to be to enable free trade and to protect the freedoms of other countries in the area but Considering China has not restricted such trade but has encouraged it, the excuse sounds a bit thin.
