Troops Could Have Night Vision Injected Into Their Eyes

Popular Mechanics

In the near future, U.S. troops could trade in their night vision goggles for a direct eye injection that allows them to see in the dark. The process, being developed by scientists in both the U.S. and China, has already proven successful in laboratory mice. The researchers are confident it would work in humans, too.

In a study from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, researchers injected nanoparticles that converted infrared light into visible light into the eyes of mice. Those mice were then placed in a maze along with mice who didn't receive the injections, and were able to find their way out of the maze. The nanoparticles bound to the photoreceptors of the mice's eyes and provided night vision for up to 10 weeks without any ill effects.

This could already be a super-soldier experiment if we're reading about it, right? And who gets it right first, us or the Chinese?

And how long before this goes mainstream and is treated as novelty contact lens? 10 years? Would you ever do this yourself if you could? Will you?

if I had the need for night vision, sure, keeping guard or what ever

just for kicks and giggles, not really. Unless it was varible xray vision 😊😊

you'll go blind if you keep doing that............

Ah hell no.

Eyes are so sensitive, what could directly poking a needle into them possibly harm?

It's safe. and we will use it for humanitarian reasons, we swear.

Seems a poor idea. Goggles can be taken off if a sudden bright light source presents itself...I'm guessing you can't un-inject yourself when an enemy shines a spotlight at you.

I think that would be a dilation issue, the eyes dilate in the dark and constrict in the light.

I'm just guessing but I don't think that would change much, light would make the pupil constrict, darkness dilate.

Ah yeah, that's true. I was thinking along lines of those dilating drops the eye doc gives, this is just to see infrared. Though I believe that could be used against a person as well.

Personally, adding a wavelength to my visual awareness, particulary the infra red as a hunter...I can't say I would'nt be tempted.

I'd love to get some NVV injections.

Sign me right up for that.

I would do this now if I could.

There are thousands of application for a thing like this you could use commercially.

When science fiction becomes reality it is ALWAYS less cool somehow. Does that make sense?

They go full Riddick on us and it’s like, meh...

Robots aren’t as much fun, clones are kinda boring, lasers burning holes in stuff are a letdown.
I don’t know, maybe I’m just lame now.
And I still want my gravity defying skateboard before I’m to old to ride it dammit!!

Oh come on, every sane person knows sticking needles in your eyes is harmless.. Eyeball tattoos are a thing now. Are you even a man, or ...

If they can combine it with some kind of like the automatic shading sunglasses mechanism, they can take out the blinding factor.

The military probably got it from this film.

Also there is no such thing as necromonger invasion. Those are myths.

I already have something that dilates my pupils a little so I can see much better at night. Unfortunately, it doesn't make me want to fight anybody.
