One could argue that our smartphones already enslave us but the benefits they provide outweigh the adverse effect.

What benefits? Everything a smart-phone can provide a person is already old, established techology; as in we could already do everything they can do. I'm not getting hooked on smart-phones and becoming lazy. There is a time and place for everything and that includes technology. Do we really need to use a search engine to find out who sang that song from 1984, from anywhere we may be? If I'm not at home, it's because I'm going out into the world to interact with some people in some way. I don't need cell-phone technology to clutter that moment and detract me from the job at hand. I feel that most people are getting cell-phones simply because everybody else is getting them and it's not cool to be different from the masses.

You might be able to infer that I don't have a cell-phone. My telephone hangs on the wall of my house and does everything it was invented to do. And it doesn't need to do anything else. When cell-phones can cook my food, do my laundry by itself and come in Ranch flavor, well then maybe I'll look into them.

And this Elon Musk thing is way beyond what I or any other human actually (really truly) needs.

You need to understand that your smartphone augments your abilities 10 fold.

No, it doesn't. Everything they can do is old technology or else something I have absolutely no need for. Smart-phones have:
Flashlights - I have 6 or 7 flashlights already. They work fine.
Cameras built into them - I have a camera already. (Well, 227 of them - don't ask.)
Alarm clocks - my alarm clock still functions properly.
Can surf the web - I've been able to surf the web for over 20 years on my computer. (I'm talking now, that's proof.)
People say smart-phones are as good as computers - where do I plug my negative scanner in?
Can send texts - I thought the telegraph was really really old and dead technology? They invented this thing you can use to hear people talking from a long way away.
Oh, and they can be used as a mobile telephone - my car came out of the factory in 1996 with a mobile telephone.

We see how cell-phones have taken over people's lives and made most people that use them into braindead zombies. Can you imagine how they'll be able to utilize our brains when they have a device hard-wired directly into it? No, not for me.

Is there anything currently i need a smartphone for that i can do no other way?

No.

But you won't get 90% of smart-phone uses to admit that.

I hope this doesn't have anything to do with Elon being picked on as a child. LIke a revenge type thing. The idea is insane.
