To me it depends on a couple of things
1) Maturity of the child They may be only 5-7 but have the maturity of a teenager.
2) The type of service that is being purchased. When I bought one for my son (10) it was for "wlakie-talkie" communications between him and my wife
and I. He also has the capability to 911. This is a great tool to get the kids home on time when they "disapear with friends"
3) In today's society, unfortunately, the 5-7 age group seems to be the most attractive to pedophiles, kidnappers etc. This is an unfortunate climate
that we live in today but we have to cope with it.
If it was 20 -30 years ago, I would agree with you, but times are vhanging unfortunately not for the better.
