WASHINGTON (AP) — Fewer mock commando raids to test nuclear power plants’ defenses against terrorist attacks.

Fewer, smaller government inspections for plant safety issues.

Less notice to the public and to state governors when problems arise.

They’re part of the money-saving rollbacks sought by the country’s nuclear industry under President Donald Trump and already approved or pending approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, largely with little input from the general public.

While many of the regulatory rollbacks happening at other agencies under the current administration may be concerning,

Do you want the next Chernobyl, Fukushima or 3-Mile Island to be in your backyard?

It's not like the nuclear industry is honest with either the government or the people to begin with.

It truly is a shame that fluorine has to be so dang corrosive in liquid salt form.


Also, for the record, small nuclear reactors can already be entirely contained in a pool of water, and run by students.

Have twin reactors about a mile from home and don't give them a thought. Now the people living in the hood about 10 miles away started a rumor that the plant was sending radiation into their homes with the electricity and causing cancer.

Dim Voters to be sure.

They would actually get more radiation living near coal powerplant than a nuclear one.

Personally, I hold that the answer lies in more decentralization of energy generation and local distribution with network distribution for back-up.

I don't know much about this type of reactor - it's hard to fathom how it will cut down on carbon, if keeping to the scale of the dying nuclear fleet. I may be wrong - and will look into it - but my instincts scream that this is just a reaction from that obsolete industry.
