Ye, they've been working on this for years, I imagine gains have been made that haven't been made public since then.

I could have sworn the Navy was openly arming ships with rail guns now.

Edit: Okay, it looks like the next batch of ships built will have them.

I'm pretty sure the vehicle that is replacing the humvee, an interesting "truck" make by Osk-Kosk, might be getting their own, scaled down version of a rail gun b/c the vehicles come equipped with a 120kW generator along with large number of capacitors and batteries. Considering the hummer has ~2.5 - 5Kw generator there is a 24-48x increase in power generation and as far as I can tell there is no electronic drive, just some equipment that is very "energy intensive".

I can only think the reason for this much power is to supply a railgun and to power the optics & radar, but that doesn't need near as much power.
