760-HP, Bulletproof Audi RS7 Is the Fastest Armored Car in the World

When it comes to armored cars, we expect to see bulky sedans or Mercedes G Wagons fit for an oligarch—not performance sedans like the Audi RS7. It seems that a Wyoming-based specialty car builder called AddArmor has gone against the norm and done just that, creating a vehicle which lays claim to the title of world's fastest armored car.

Meet the AddArmor APR RS7, a vehicle built to withstand bullets, explosions, and anyone who might be trying to put a stop to your day. AddArmor has taken pride in building a luxury sports sedan that can not only protect its occupants but also reach speeds north of 200 miles per hour.

Beginning the tour under the hood, AddArmor has made use of the RS7's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. Despite being respectably powerful from the factory, the RS7's builders knew that speed can sometimes mean the difference between life and death—so they've worked with APR, one of the most well-known Volkswagen and Audi tuners, to squeeze some extra life out of the platform. This means that drivers will have up to 760 horsepower at the disposal of their right foot.

Unlike most armored cars, the RS7 hasn't been bogged down by heavy steel. In fact, because AddArmor used a special polycarbonate composite rather than traditional methods, the total armoring weight adds "no more than 200 pounds" to the vehicle's overall weight.

Whether you are a survivalist, or an avid fan of 007, technology is making possible to have a bulletproof and explosion proof "luxury sports sedan" that also looks awesome, meanwhile being able to drive as fast as you would with almost any other fast vehicle since it has a 704 HP engine. The company that created the vehicle AddAmor, based in Wyoming, partnered with APR to make the Audi RS7.

Believe it or not the added weight from using polycarbonate composite in the body of the car and it's windows adds to only ~200lbs more than any other sports sedan.

Apart from being bullet and explosion proof, the RS7 comes with a variety of gadgets which would make any James Bond wannabe jealous. Including in it's arsenal of gadgets it has pepper spray, electric shock handles, tear gas, frequency jammers to disable drones, strobe lights, and has a gas detection system which can create a "positive-pressurized cabin to temporarily shield occupants from poison gas." The car also has 360 degree night vision cameras and "Pirelly run-flat tires."

Although the price of the vehicle at ~$205,000 U.S.D. is too steep for most people to own it, there is an even more expensive version of the vehicle which the company claims can withstand anything short of an atomic weapon. You can also add other protections to the vehicle such as "anti-intrusion add-on packages for vehicles starting at $28,000."

Don't get me wrong, some plastics are very strong, but 200 pounds of the stuff will only hold up so much before shattering.

Laminated polycarbonate armor is being used, and is known to be very strong withstanding multiple shots.

For example.

Patriot Armor Laminated Polycarbonate sheets provide protection against multiple-shot penetration as well as forced entry attempts.

But...it's an Audi.

If they could get their reliability numbers up, perhaps it might be worth the money. Having a bulletproof car that won't start is like building an expensive bunker and putting fake tires on it.

According to the article, the vehicle is bulletproof and bomb proof. Also, "There is an even more expensive version of the vehicle which the company claims can withstand anything short of an atomic weapon."

Key phrase here is 'the vehicle'. Try this experiment: put a mouse into a Tupperware container, duct tape it closed, and toss it off the roof of a five-story building. The container will be perfectly fine following impact, but the mouse will be a gonner.

look at the weight per square foot of that armor. NIJ3+ is 5.25 pounds per square foot, and the muliple shot protection laminated polycarbonate is near 10 pounds per square foot.

From that there is between 20 and 40 square feet of protection afforded, which is not enough to cover the cabin of a vehicle, so it must be of lower quality than NIJ3

Seems like its designed for quick bits of trouble in that if things go wrong it'll last long enough to get you the hell out of there or your security team to arrive and solve the problem.

Pair of pallet forks on a JCB digger and lift it off the ground and all that speed etc is useless as with the beast etc you're going to have to bring in some serious lifting gear which will be pretty obvious and easy to avoid.

Probably designed more for the CEO or mid upper ranking politician who just needs to avoid the odd crank but fancies a bit more of a sporty ride.

The other link i gave is not about the laminated polycarbonate protection in the vehicle. That's just a completely different company that makes armor from laminated polycarbonate. That was my point, armor is also being made with laminated polycarbonate and it works.

No need for a lift. Placing some air bags on the ground you could pop the car off it's wheels in under a second. I've seen moveable/temporary speed bumps which could hide these sorts of things, though you would need to have all 4 wheels off the ground but that shouldn't be hard to get 8-12" of lift from those bags.

put a bit more power under the hood then who cares about armor, just outrun the bullets.

I like the asymmetric thinking there.

If you were going to take a high value target down like that, you'd watch your prey, anticipate possible routes, and cause road congestions with staged accidents or roadworks. 200mph top speed wont get you anywhere when your wedged in a jam with the rest of the traffic.
