US Carrier Strike Group In Pre-Deployment Exercise

The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group departed Naval Station Norfolk over the holiday weekend to begin its composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) ahead of a deployment later this year.

The Truman CSG deployed from April to December 2018 and is going out for a second deployment during the sustainment phase of its readiness cycle, where the carrier maintains high readiness in case it is called upon to deploy again, surge in an emergency or participate in exercises or other events.

During COMPTUEX, the carrier, its escorts and the carrier air wing will prove again to the trainers in Carrier Strike Group 4 and to U.S. 2nd Fleet that they are ready to deploy overseas again.

Sure, this is obviously routine. There was a COMPUTEX exercise last year as well (with a different carrier strike group). However, with the recent "technical issues" affecting US vessels (not just the Normandy) this year, it helps to be prepared. And this point stands not just for the US, but her allies as well (with Germany being plagued with military aircraft troubles).

Any ideas where the Truman will be deployed to?

It's normally well known in advance where they are going but it can change at anytime. I was on the Lincoln in a Marine squadron and we knew we were going to the Persian Gulf. That changed though with Blackhawk Down. We headed to Somalia.

Truman will replace Eisenhower on her deployment later this year. Eisenhower went in for a 6 month maintenance period that has run to 19 months. She did her post maintenance work ups and shakedown in April, but has to go through a complete training cycle still. So Truman will deploy to the 7th Fleet AOR in her place.
