It’s really good! The second book comes out July 16th and I’ll be ordering it, it’s called Howling Dark. Is also worth mentioning that just the Primary human empire is Roman like, their church the Chantry controls all the tech and who can use what in order to keep the peace through power and intimidation on a planetary scale. There are other factions of humans that live a sort of ultra libertarianism life style and have free access to tech on all levels assuming your social score is high enough. There is also a faction of humans fused with machines but they are only mentioned a few times.

It’s got gladiator style fights, wars, mystery, class struggles, and some great world building.
Everything I mentioned is in the books forward or first chapter so no spoilers.

'The Mote in God's Eye' by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle remains my favorite.

I always meant to read this one. Having read Ringworld i looked for other Niven books and this one looked good.

Robert A. Heinlein - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. One of my all time favorite books, let alone sci-fi. Also The Puppet Masters, Stranger in a Strange land(get the unexpurgated version) and many others. I don't have all the Lazarus Long books and that's a bummer as I'd like to read the rest.

Stephen King - The Dark Tower and related works.

Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451 and gotta plug A Sound of Thunder.

Piers Anthony - The Blue Adept series. The game in these books would be so awesome to see on the screen. The Incarnations of Immortality series and the Bio of a Space Tyrant series are also well worth the time.

Childhoods end by Arthur C. Clark. Clarke wrote some really fantastic short stories as well. But that one is my favorite.

It's definitely somewhere close to soft science fiction, but I really enjoy the Joe Ledger series by Jonathan Maberry. Imagine Jack Bauer versus...
* Zombies
* Aliens
* Vampires
* Lovecraftian Horrors

...and more. That's what you get with Joe Ledger, a Baltimore cop recruited into the Department of Military Sciences. It's a lot of fast-paced action that's just this side of believable. It definitely delves into conspiracy theory territory, while avoiding a number of tropes really common to conspiracy theory fiction.

Back in the day I really did love 'Flowers for Algernon' by Daniel Keyes.

It's aged a bit now but still a great basic premise.

Rereading Bank's Culture series at the mo and they're all fantastic.

Am pretty sure this could be classed under 'Science Fiction'.

Truly great (and rather disturbing) book.

I don't know what genre you'd put it under but 'Perdido Street Station' by China Melville is a truly mindbogglingly awesome book.
