When the mind program which is consciousness becomes or has been corrupted or damaged, there is two choices in which the self can, as a whole, single
unit, move forward and function: either, forgetful of the corruption, barring ignorance; else to face the facts, however fearful or disturbing, and
resolve to change.
When the change is difficult, the amount by which it is so is directly related to the growing temptation to turn away and forget.
For most, the impulse to awareness from there, action, is primary, and only in outstanding* eg important metaphysical and or violent/jarring physical
circumstances do they forget. There are, however, some who are the exact opposite: those whose unfortunate first and primary impulse is to ignorance,
and are only capable of awareness sporadically, and when under duress.
For one such, they must firstly grapple with the immensity of their own corruption, their dishonesty with themselves. Become aware of [that] and then
in that awareness, move in some other direction with purpose.
Will add more at some point
ETA: In a sea of ignorance which, once enmeshed, none have ever escaped, the way one individual can act is to not hope by their own efforts to get
free, but by the presence of those around them and -much more potently- those after them if applicable. Cooperation. Laying bricks down by discovering
them and placing them into words, as they were meant to be- knowledge is to be solidified so it can be
received into memory first and foremost, whereby it becomes habit and therefore instinct. That knowledge can then be further refined since it has
essentially become public domain(even if ownership rights still apply) in the sense that it is open source.
So research into ways that society can be free IS the method by which the individual can work forwards freedom, and it will only be achieved when that
society does said research and applies its findings! Only then can we begin as individuals to change now that we have the proper environmental stimuli
by which to evolve!
