Bashir jailed for consipracy

Abu Bakar Bashir has been jailed today for conspiring with the Bali bombers ahead of the deadly 2002 attack.

He also says accusations that he was a terrorist had been fabricated by the US and Australia to stop him from preaching his hardline brand of Islam

I tell you what I think, I think it sucks that this scum gets 2.5 years, for
conspiring to kill hundreds.

Yet they seem pretty intent on putting Schapelle Corby in front of a firing squad.
They still havn't even proven where the drugs came from, and I don't
think they have any intention of doing so

I think this ruling is kind of interesting..

If the Indonesian court wanted to pacify the Australians, they would have handed down a much more severe sentence. If they had wanted to pacify the cleric's followers, they would have released him.

What exactly is Indonesia trying to do here? It looks like they're trying to walk a very thin line, and my prediction is their strategy will fail. They would have been better off appeasing one side or the other, rather than pissing them both off.

There are SO MANY inconsistencies in the evidence surrounding the events at issue, I'm surprised a verdict was handed down at all - I was predicting a dead-lock.

I know a lot of people just accept what is handed to them, but Indonesia has not been going gently. Their parliament had an open, heated debate about the nature of the Bali bomb, and a sizable percentage of the Indonesian government believes a micronized nuclear device was used (the evidence clearly points to this). The Jakarta Post ran a couple of stories on this issue, and despite the best efforts of the mainstream media the Indonesian people are fairly well informed about the nature of the explosion (Bali), certainly more so than nearly all Americans, Australians, and Europeans who are calling for the death or dismemberment of Bashir and Amrozi.

I can't figure out what Indonesia is up to here. It's pretty obvious that while radical islam is a threat, it lacks the tactical nuclear weapons to carry out attacks like those seen in Bali and Jakarta.

I have no love for religious extremists, generally they make the world a more miserable place, and the fact that they encourage ignorance makes them anathema to a sane and rational community. However, I think the evidence points to another culprit. I know nobody wants to turn this into another thread on Bali, so I'm not going to dump a bunch of links and information on this thread. There are other threads going that speak to this issue, and anyone who wishes to be more informed on the actual evidence, is urged to seek those threads out.

He got given what he deserved in accordance with indonesian laws. He was acquitted of more severe charges, therefore he's innocent in those respects in the eyes of the law.

A bit light is an understatement especially when you consider they are looking to get the death penalty for that Gold Coast chick who was caught trying to take marijuana into Bali. I'm anti-marijuana but IMO it is less of a crime than conspiring to kill over 200 people, at least the people who buy marijuana have the choice and if they don't want to buy it because of health issues they don't have to. The people who died at Bali were not given a choice.

You're assuming Bashir had anything to do with the people who died in Bali. The evidence shows he would have liked to organize an attack, but lacked the means to do so. If Amrozi was his 'bomb making specialist' he was in real trouble. Amrozi didn't even know that you can't mix perchlorate and black powder without going 'BOOM.' Amrozi was clearly a patsie, and that makes me suspect as to Bashir's guilt in the matter.

As to the marijuana thing you mentioned, that's just despicable. The fact that those people consider importing herbs a capital offense..well, they've got no right to their own lives now do they? Maybe Bashir had the right idea, setting bombs all over Indonesia, if that's the way Indonesia wants to conduct itself. Death for Dank, that blows my mind.

Well they found him guilty of conspiring with the Bali bombers didn't they? I don't know whether he is innocent or not but if he was found guilty of being involved than i think the punishment should fit the crime and i do think the crime is serious. If they can't prove his guilt than they shouldn't be putting him in jail but the fact that they are suggests that the case was made well enough for guilt to be proven.

So, they failed to make the heaviest charges stick to him, while most of the public (probably right so) believes he should hang for those crimes.

While I do believe that crimes should be proven in a court of law rather than by public opinion, I think it's a bit of sour grapes that this guy gets less than others for tax evasion or something...

Either the case was badly prepared or they are affraid of their own muslim population....

This case leaves a rotten smell any way you look at it...
