BANGALORE-AUGUST 23: This is the story of a male adult monkey that has metamorphosised as God Hanuman. No joke. A monkey sitting atop the statue of God Hanuman for the past twenty-two days is attracting streams of people to this unbelievable happening . It all happened at Thimmaganapalli. A monkey just came inside the Altar or sanctum to the surprise of the priest and other on lookers. They bet the monkey with the stick and many have even threw stones. In the melee the monkey bore all this and came out with a new avatar as monkey God. The effort of the villagers to chase the monkey did not yield any results. The monkey doesn't eat anything, not even a delicious banana.

"This is the reincarnation of God. This monkey is no ordinary monkey. It has come here twenty two days back and sitting here day and night. I come in the morning and perform pooja till late night. Thousands of people across are coming to see this wonder. For the people of this village this is for good. For the first five days we tried to chase this monkey away from the temple but it did not budge and inch. Then the elders decided that it is God and we are performing pooja," said Krishnamurthy, priest of the Hanuman temple.

The word spread across attracting thousands of people to see this ardent devotee. "I have come from Hindupur to see this wonder. This is really God coming in new avtar and reincarnation. For me this is God and for Good, said Nirmala, a visitor.

Even now the monkey is sitting atop the statue like a rock. People are thronging and performing pooja. (ANI)

Those people are something. Some of the most brilliant scientists and mathematicians in the world come from there, but also outbreaks of monkey men and flying face scratchers! What a diverse culture!!

I don't think it's so odd.

Consider the Americans and all the apparitions of the Virgin Mary and Jesus on trees, windows, waffles, puddles of ice cream, etc, etc. Thousands of people come and leave offerings.

Monkey's funeral draws crowds From a correspondent in Hyderabad, India September 01, 2002

THOUSANDS of people attended the funeral of a monkey revered as a divine incarnation of a Hindu god in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

But animal rights activists said the animal, which collapsed yesterday, died of starvation and exhaustion after it was trapped inside a temple for a month by over-zealous worshippers.

According to local police officials, 3000 to 4000 people were present when the monkey was cremated according to Hindu custom, during a ceremony organised by the temple committee.

The animal had strayed into a temple dedicated to Hanuman - the Hindu monkey god - in Timmaganipalli village, some 400 kilometres south of the Andhra Pradesh capital Hyderabad.

When the villagers discovered the monkey sitting on the idol of Hanuman they thought it was a reincarnation of the god and refused to let it out of the temple.

Hundreds of pilgrims poured in to seek blessings, often garlanding the monkey with flowers, besides making offerings of money and coconuts.

"We tried to regulate the traffic of pilgrims to ensure proper rest to the monkey but it had created quite a sensation that at least 300 to 400 people would come everyday to see it," N Kalidas, deputy superintendent of police told AFP.

Even when the monkey stopped eating, animal rights groups were not allowed to take it away.

"The monkey was quite old and both its hind legs were paralysed," Narendra Reddy secretary of animal rights group Karuna told AFP.

"It clearly needed help and we wanted to have it shifted to a veterinary hospital but the villagers just refused to co-operate with us," he said.

A team of vets examined the monkey after the courts intervened last week.

Karuna had petitioned the Andhra Pradesh high court to rescue the monkey, which they claimed was being exploited by the priests of the temple to make money.

The court passed a directive on Wednesday ordering the local police and administration to ensure the monkey was not harassed by pilgrims and given proper medical attention, but it died a few days later.

Pilgrims flock to 'divine potato'

Pilgrims are flocking to a house in Bombay where they believe that Elephant headed Hindu Lord Ganesha has appeared in the shape of a potato.



The potato is said to be shaped like the Lord Ganesha and people are offering money and gifts to seek the blessing of the "divine vegetable".

The vegetable was grown in Uttar Pradesh and bought by Najmuddin Alibhai Jessani, a fruit and vegetable exporter.

It was about to be eaten by the family, when Mr Jessani's sister-in-law noticed the resemblance to Lord Ganesha. The potato's fame spread after it was featured in local newspapers.

The main living room of the family home has been turned into a shrine to the potato.

Around 60 or 70 people a day are visiting the shrine to leave gifts of marigolds and money. It's understood that the money will be given to a religious charity.

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO SEE BUDDHA'S FOOTPRINT GUARDED BY FROG


Thousands of people in Thailand are flocking to see a puddle which they say

is in the shape of Buddha's footprint.

They believe the water in the puddle will relieve pain and bring good fortune and

say it is being guarded by a frog.

Many visitors to the site have left incense, flowers and candles when they came to pray while others have being asking the frog for this month's lottery numbers.

The puddle was found at the top of Had Sai waterfall in Pungna province, reports the Kao Sod newspaper.

The frog is said to be weak and close to death because many people have being rubbing talcum powder into its skin in the hope of seeing the lottery numbers.

But Jamnong Suksawad, head of the national parks commission, says he doesn't want to see the area damaged by thousands of visitors.

He said: "Today I ordered my officers to control the area but people now think that this is a holy place and we are powerless to stop them coming here."
