Darwin, on Australia's north coast was rocked by an earthquake at 9.51 AEDT this evening. The earthquake measured between 6.8 and 7.5 on the richter
scale and the epicentre of the quake is believed to be 800 kilometres north of Darwin in the Banda sea off Indonesia. The quake was felt as far away
as katherine in the Northern Territory, over 280 kilometres from Darwin and came in a series of small tremors which were felt for several minutes. A
current major fear is that the quake could trigger a tsunami.

Darwin resident Paul Dyer, who lives about 3km from the CBD, had just sat down on his couch at home when the earth began to shake.
"I'm in a ground-level house and the house was shaking like there's no tomorrow," he told AAP.
"I was sitting on the couch and could feel the ground shaking.
"It was pretty full-on, there's bound to be some structural damage somewhere."
Dr Mark Leonard from Geoscience Australia said subsequent readings measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.8.

The quake, which is believed to be the strongest in the area for the last few years caused the evacuation of Darwins casino.
So far no injuries have been reported from the quake.
