If I have a project or a build with something I'm not familiar with (whether it's using unfamiliar materials/tools/build techniques, etc) I'll go
through the whole build process in my mind from start to finish, I'll often do this many times over spending hours thinking of potential issues or
stumbling blocks.
The idea is to foresee problems before they arise, and to find appropriate solutions.
Because of this, it can take me a while to pick up tools, but when I do, I tend to know exactly what I'm doing and how, and nasty project-altering
problems are a rarity. By going over the build in my head from start to finish, not only can I spot problems before they become problems, I can refine
and improve the design of whatever it is that I'm up to.
Another advantage is that when I do build things, they tend to get put together pretty quickly as I've already built it in my mind several if not many
times over.
