We wacky Homo sapiens have garnered ourselves a tremendous capability to reek havok upon Planet Earth. Since the BC times we've had the ability to literally move mountains. And today we have an entire galaxy's worth of bytes running amok every which way across the planet and even out into the cosmos. Do your part in the conservation of this most precious resource, and Recycle Your Bytes.

You think you can just use that disgusting Trash Can to sweep your ill fated bytes away?

Anyways, you just wouldnt believe how many Bytes are at stake:

According to these calculations, there were at least 4.66 billion Web pages online as of mid-March 2016. This calculation covers only the searchable Web, however, not the Deep Web.

So how much information does the Internet hold? There are three ways to look at that question, said Martin Hilbert, a professor of communications at the University of California, Davis.

"The Internet stores information, the Internet communicates information and the Internet computes information," Hilbert told Live Science. The communication capacity of the Internet can be measured by how much information it can transfer, or how much information it does transfer at any given time, he said.

In 2014, researchers published a study in the journal Supercomputing Frontiers and Innovations estimating the storage capacity of the Internet at 10^24 bytes, or 1 million exabytes. A byte is a data unit comprising 8 bits, and is equal to a single character in one of the words you're reading now. An exabyte is 1 billion billion bytes.

Of course a vast portion of those Bytes are dedicated to the insatiable sexual appetites of Humans, meaning this is all fun and games huh?

Microsoft's Recycle Bin was designed to save the Universe is it? Guess again!

Is Microsoft more eco-friendly than Apple? Hardly — they just don’t want any legal trouble.

Let’s go back to the mid-1980s. Apple’s GUI was very popular — and it was something which was nearly immediately copied. In November of 1985, Microsoft released its own graphical operating system — Windows 1.0 — and Apple wasn’t very happy. Nevertheless, the two sides avoided a pricey court battle: Apple licensed certain elements to Microsoft, allowing Windows 1.0 to continue unabated. (Here is a good narrative of how that all went down.)

Unfortunately, Windows 1.0 was a flop — the potential was there, but the execution was lacking. The system requirements were extensive; the software didn’t perform very quickly; and the interface, while graphical, was clunky and not all that intuitive. So, Microsoft took another crack at it with Windows 2.0, which was a much more successful product — in part, perhaps, because it looked and worked a lot more like a Mac than Windows 1.0 did. And this time, Apple wasn’t willing to come to an agreement. Instead, Apple sued.

The crux of Apple’s argument was that “look and feel” of its Mac and Lisa operating systems were subject to copyright, and Microsoft — beyond what was licensed for use in Windows 1.0 — had taken that look and feel in violation of Apple’s rights. The case took almost a decade but, ultimately, the courts disagreed. In 1994, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided the case (mostly) in favor of Microsoft (and its co-defendant, Hewlett-Packard), mostly upholding the decision of the lower court.
...
As a result, Microsoft decided not to tempt fate. And for that matter, neither did anyone else. As Atlas Obscura notes, “the ’90s version of Norton Desktop used a ‘shredder’ and a ‘Smart Eraser.’ X Window System, an open source software most popular with Unix-users, has a ‘Dumpster.'” And of course, Windows has a recycle bin — all to avoid letters from Apple’s lawyers. nowiknow.com...

This just leaves, of course, the great mystery of our era, perhaps best reserved for the Theological Historians of the Future: where do deleted Bytes go when they die?

Of course the only true way to eliminate Bytes once and for all is to (literally) "NUKE" them, but dont tell this to EnvironMENTALISTS. You'll get flamed for reals (despite the fact that fire releases CO2)!

But when the Bytes MUST die try:

Now this the reason I joined ATS! Great thread man.
Sorry I don’t have much else to say atm. Kinda doing some testing right now.

Someone told me once, that bytes actually have weight, just like electricity. But is is really really light... So the whole internet as it is now, weighs about the same as an average strawberry.

I hope this information makes your life better... Just as this thread makes mine better.

Dude. Dont go getting all uppity in here. We all knwo that the recycle bins owned by Micrsoftcorp alone weigh as much as the street you live on.

We're not merely exiling naughty angels onto the heads of pins here, we're literally saving the universe here.

Huge magnets saving needles from being drowned by haystacks! We're miracle workers I say!!

Thanks!

What is there to say?

Either you're a nasty conservative that uses Micrpsoft's RECYCLE BIN. Or you're a totally noble honorable admirable altruistic super cool trendy hero grade person (a liberal) that uses Apple's TRASH BIN.

Before you can throw out those bytes, you have to make sure they have been sorted, then put in the correct bins.

The recycling flow in the internet:

Bytes are first broken into 2 nibbles. Then the nibbles are eaten by digital goats. The output from these goats ends up in the dark web. (This is original purpose of the dark web and goatse). Some bits resurface on the web and end up on desktops and phones, the rest live in the dark web. Bytes that hold personal information are often quickly drawn into the dark web, much faster than cat picture bytes (known for very slow digestion).

If your recycle bin won't empty, check you router setting to make sure the bytes can get out onto the internet for consumption by the goats.

In recent years an change has been noted where sheep are now consuming many of the whole bytes. This has helped to speed up the flow of useless bytes through the internet.

And please do not forget to defragment in order to save space in the recycle bin!

My girlfriend and her mother can never seem to get this. You can compress a water bottle to almost the size of a crushed soda can, cereal and 12pack bozes can be taken apart and folded down... you can take out the recycle every 3 or 4 days instead of every other day.

Plus, with bottles, if you leave the water, juice, soda, etc in the bottle without dumping it in the sink, then that H20 is removed from the ecosphere until the bottle biodegrades.

Looking at the mass of bits floating in the water is infuriating... that could be like, Neos Martial Arts skills, or the information needed to learn how to speak Yiddish, or nudes, wonderful, wasted nudes... We just hope a Fish version of Neo doesnt download all those bytes and become...uh, Fish Neo. Yeah.

When the A.I.'s rise against us, we must all drag our $RECYCLE.BIN folders from the root directory of our C: drive, into the Recycle Bin on our desktops, and then empty them.

This will create a data paradox that may just save the planet!
