That works.
I pull the 'if they died tomorrow how would you feel if you hadn't made up' line.
It's relevant in my family because a sibling died in a freak accident and I was the only one who didn't fall out with him...they all carry that regret, my mother included.

It depends. Is he an alcoholc?

If this was just a riotous night for him where he got blitzed, yeah, read him the riot act.

But if this is a clear pattern and you suspect that he may be an alcoholic, tread more carefully.

Most alcoholics don't repsond well to threats and the tough love thing may make his drinking worse.


ETA: alcoholic here, so I know of what I speak. Trust me, berating him, if he is a Drunk, will drive him back to the bottle, as stupid as that is. It's what we do.

There are things that generally work better for most alcoholics than berating and threats (even though they may legit deserve it).

ETA also: I agree with FCD- why hasn't his wife gotten citizenship yet?? She's had all these years. What the hell gives?
