I called the local Wal-Mart to find out their hours on Thanksgiving for a student. Open 24 hours. I told the woman on the phone I hoped she could take it off. Nope, she hasn't had Thanksgiving off in 19 years. But she gets a 15% discount for anything she buys from her employer that day.

We are citizens, not consumers. This is so sad on so many levels.
1. 15% is one piddly discount. What's that, like $30 off a TV?
2. What's more sad-- people in low wage jobs work Thanksgiving for big business because they need the money and don't get holiday pay, or that the shoppers think consuming is a good use of a family holiday? Is this really how we want to spend our free time?
3. The very day after we celebrate gratitude, we go and buy more junk?

Go walk in the woods. Read a book. Take a break from consumption for a day. Show the big corps we are not their slaves.

I've been boycotting Black Friday since 2004. I don't even buy gas that day. Not because I'm a dainty saint. Because corporate slavery pisses me the hell off. Join me, friends.

15% = $15 off every hundred. Buy a nice TV, much more than $30 savings...
I don’t do Black Friday either...not out of principles, just hate unruly, rude, scavenging crowds!

Buy nothing this Friday... Who you kidding?

Hell, I need stuff, any kind of stuff, even stuff that I don't need. Come to think of it, I remember my father-in-law buying a snowmobile outfit AND he didn't even have a snowmobile. Hey, we need to keep the people who make that crap employed and or deserving of a Christmas bonus if Black Friday sales increase profits.

That's rough. All the best to him, and family, if he has one. My heart goes out to him. I hope they can do some sort of holiday rotation, so he can get the 4th of July off, or New Years.

Pac-man consumerism.
I saw some bar bathroom graffiti once that said, "Work, bitches! Get stuff!"

I have lots of things that piss me off, but this isn’t one of them. I would rather not let anything piss me off. Sadly I have not gotten to that point yet, but I try.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I never do.

I'm not much of a consumer.

What's ironic is that the best time to buy christmas presents is after christmas.

I'm not a christmas person, but I am a bargain person.

Everything I know leads to the exact opposite conclusion.

Yes,

i am sure the woman was forced to work at Walmart all this time...Forced to endure employment which does not give Thanksgiving off for 19 years. Nevermind the Holiday pay or Time and a Half Hourly Bonuses..no, we must..feel..that having to "work" on a day celebrating the destruction of one tribe over another, augmented entirely by the Pilgrims with guns, is degrading, and sad.

Black Friday used to mean something.

Now it’s over commercialized.

"Buy Nothing Day this Friday"

Am not too much for sale, other than having a job, maybe...

Do you have any specific recommendations, for exactly where we should not shop, and for which explicit deals?

Thanks.
(Asking for a friend.)

To this day I still choose not buy petrol from BP because of what they did in the gulf of Mexico.
