I didn't read the article because your thread was more than enough to think about Toys.
And really, it goes to the nature of consciousness huh? Are we some special breed that for one reason or another does not have to think of itself as part of the overall animal population? Or are we to many degrees just one aspect of that kingdom.

As individuals, if indeed there is such a thing, just how much of our being, our consciousness really is so far advanced of the rest of the kingdom that we do not act just like other species.

I liked the way you finished the OP with a broad question. Just how much of our current problems are attributable to manipulative human forces and how much is do to just the natural flow of nature.

To answer, it comes down to who are we, us humans. I can't help but think of that Steinbeck title ''Of Mice and Men.

Well. If you asked me I would tell you we are a hybrid species that's been genetically modified from chimpanzees by something else.

The Enuma Elish describes a scenario where Enki create man and then goes on to the biblical flood.

So yes we are very close to the animal species of this planet and we are also part of the greater conscious of this planet and universe as well.

Are we just a program executing lines of code or do we truly have free will? Or even better yet does the answer to that question depend. Can we have free will or can we execute lines of code?

Since this is about Japan, a few things come to mind.
As a society, they still have this overbearing cultural expectation looming over each person, especially the males. To be super successful or be branded a failure...in whatever field.

Housing in Japan is ridiculous. Mortgages that are passed on to your descendants in some cases. How's a young man supposed to ever get his own place to bring up a family in this sort of environment?

Which leads back to the first point. Previously you could be a great engineer, putting together cars that would run for 200k miles, or building ships that would criss cross the oceans, you could make beautiful, hand crafted swords, furniture...Practice bonsai, make awesome food....These days, you need to make money. That's all that seems to matter, since housing is so extravagantly expensive. Many choose the job that pays, that gives them nothing in terms of wellbeing or respect for their talents.

They grew up with absent fathers who worked 14 or 16 hour days in the office, then spent their last few waking hours getting drunk in some hostess bar so they weren't crushed by the knowledge that their lives were pretty much pointless. They consumed, putting all their hopes and dreams into the new gadget or the trip to the West for a vacation of collecting photos of places they were in too much of a rush to enjoy....

Now, there aren't the same opportunities to amass the wealth and spend it the way their fathers did. Faced with this, they choose the drug of tech and porn. Working just enough to continue to escape each night in the best way they can, in whatever hovel they can afford.

They dropped out but their society is structured in such a way that they have no real freedom to drop out in another way, even the bosozoku gangs seem to be pale imitations of those that came before them.


This depression is what is probably at the heart of them opting out of finding girlfriends. Until things get better, nothing will change.

Hmm. Japanese people do have crazy downward pressure to be successful its deeply engrained in their culture. Sepuku comes to mind.

Now that is a reply to the real issue Toys. As to the Enuma Elish, I call them more generally ''The Whoevers''
We can take any of these ''scenarios'' on how humans came to be but it all comes down to what you say. How much code and how much free will.

Even if there was no intervention from outside our physical habitat the question still remains, how much is it just genetics and dna and cultural evolution with no thinking required, and how much is it genuinely attributable to real consciousness and free will. I think we can only find out for ourselves, within ourselves.

Totally and, when you think about it, previous generations had the ability to learn, to master things. You could learn to carve wood over the course of 10 or 20 years and that talent would get you some respect, you could feed and clothe your family, put a roof over their heads and feel some sort of peace with what you do.

Now though, a kid is likely going to spend all his childhood being pushed through school, after school and weekend school in the expectation he can then get picked up by a big corporation and shuffle paper forever...Any that don't get that Toshiba job feel like failures. They go and work in some noodle bar or KFC or whatever, get paid peanuts and know, deep in their bones, they are looked down on as having failed their ancestors.

Just returning from a two week trip to Japan, I can see why they're dropping out. Super stressful culture coupled with some of the most materialistic women I've ever seen. Obviously two weeks isn't long enough to adequately judge, but at the same time I can see why dropping out would be attractive over there.
