Leader
KIA RITE!
Prepare yourself!
KIA MAU!
Hold Fast!
RINGA RINGA PAKIA!
Slap hands against the thighs!
WAEWAE TAKAHIA KIA KINO NEI HOKI
Stamp the feet as hard as you can!

Chorus
KIA KINO HEI HOKI
As hard as you can!

Chorus
KA MATE! KA MATE KA ORA
Am I going to die? No , I'm alive!

Leader
KA MATE! KA MATE!
We're going to die! We're going to die!
We thought we were all going to die

Chorus
KA ORA, KA ORA!
We're going to live! We're going to live!

All together
TENEI TE TANGATA PU'RU-HURU
This is a fully grown man, hairy so strong.
NA'A NEI TIKI MAI WHAKA-WHITI TE ...
who has brought back the sun.
A UPA … NE! KA UPA …NE!
One upward step! Another upward step!

A UPANE KUAPANE WHITI TE RA!
An upward step, another… the sun shining

I have always thought that dance and chant is one of the stupidest things I have seen. If I was on the other team I would just turn my back on them when they do their stupid little dance

The haka is not for you. It is a challenge to the other team to see if they can beat the greatest international team ever in history.

Then you dismiss the cultural significance of the dance. And miss its message of intimidation. All of the muscle and brains in the world can't hold a candle to faith and drive created by a bond of ritual. The will is stronger than the mind. The bond is stronger than stone. Battle cries have been used for centuries and do serve a purpose. Perceived as stupidity or not, it still leaves the desired effect subconsciously.

This is the original Haka, the one you're referring to is called the Kapa O Pango it was first performed on 2006.

It's called "the way it is". It's part of the heritage of the sport of Rugby. It's a challenge before a tough physical game. You should consider it in that context rather than considering it to be "stupid". Similar challenges are performed by other countries, notably by Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

Anyway, teams have ignored the Haka in the past and done other things, including pressing right up to the Haka while being performed, so it's not always a one-way-street.
