USA Health Care Delusion - Are you Afflicted?

Anecdote. I'm an American. A friend of mine recently had their gal bladder removed. They have insurance they pay upwards of 800 dollars a month for. The very first question from the nurse's mouth was "Do you have insurance?" No problem, my friend was covered.

Fast forward to post surgery. They receive a bill for something like $5500. How much did insurance pay? 66 bucks.

I don't know why someone would rather pay 800 a month for a middleman rather than pay a little extra each paycheck to have universal healthcare. I'm willing to bet the increase on their taxes per month would not equal $800.

You shouldn't have to haggle for healthcare with any company whose only true interest is in turning a profit.

If this thread and talk of taxfunded healthcare was on ATS just 10 years ago it would have been shouted down as socialist commies.
I hope you guys get what I have with the NHS, genuinely as a fellow human.

I had a very long and drawn out debate with a buddy who is in the Air Force about this once. It really just boils down to "I got mine, screw you." That's really sad too; there are so many people who through no fault of their own have had their lives ruined by the financial burden of medical bills.

I know, I know... bootstraps. The problem is a lot of people don't even have boots, let alone straps to pull themselves up by.

Just know that not all of us across the pond have a selfish mentality.

I guess we could take the whole "pay for it yourself" mentality to it's ultimate conclusion. You have a fire? Put it out yourself, you leech! Need those potholes fixed? Do it yourself, you whiny baby; I ain't paying for that asphalt. At least we have enough guns to shoot the bad guy if they show up.

It's just a sad situation.

Yes I get that - but I talked about both in the context of the money is there to help people if so much want wasted fighting wars that only benefit the MIC

If you aren't a citizen, you can't buy land here unless you (substantially) live on it (there are all sorts of caveats & exceptions, though).

It has stopped a lot of overseas investors just using NZ land real estate speculation as foreign currency (and some Hollywood types from buying up properties they'll never even see).

This is US Healtcare. Its a for profit business. Its not about saving lives, its about making money. If a person is drowning, you need to make sure they can pay for the rescue or else its a waste of time and money to save them.

Here in the US, life is not sacred, but rather a commodity to be traded and valued so that a select few can be enriched by it. Here in the US we worship a golden calf called cash, and if you're not praying to it, you're a worthless waste of space that those in power want to get rid of as profitably and expeditiously as possible.
