European LUMENTILE project develops luminous surfaces that change color for diverse decorative, informative or safety applications.

A team of European scientists have developed a range of digital, ceramic tiles that can change color, pattern, or play videos from a connected smart phone or tablet, effectively turning a bedroom wall or ceiling into a giant cinema screen.
Based on photonics technology, the LUMENTILE (Luminous Electronic Tile) project combines the simplicity of a plain ceramic tile with sophisticated touch screen technology to create an interactive light source.

The tile consists of a combination of ceramic, glass and organic electronics, the luminous tile includes structural materials, solid-state light sources and electronics, which can be controlled from a central computer, a smart phone or tablet.

A combination of ceramic, glass and organic electronics, the luminous tile includes structural materials, solid-state light sources and electronic chips and can be controlled with a central computer, a smart phone or tablet.

With its durable nature, the luminous ceramic tile could be used externally: placing it on the outside of a building creates the obvious potential for advertising or changing the colour or appearance. However the tiles can be flat or curved to fit around columns or uneven contours.

Military vehicles, for example, fitted with this external ‘skin’ crossing a variety of terrains, such as woodland, desert or water would be capable of unlimited camouflage at the flick of a switch.

“It may sound like the stuff of James Bond but external tiles would create a ‘chameleonic skin’, or instant camouflage. Although we are a long way off this yet, this would allow a car or building to blend completely into its surroundings, and hence ‘disappear’,” Giuliani enthused.

I saw this on my way out the door yesterday. I did a little more looking into it and this is too cool for school, fool!!

Ceramics are about to be everywhere. I had a thread up about a liquid polymer containing ceramic ingredients could be sprayed liquid, then sintered into a ceramic. But this is even better! Take that 68" television!

Each tile is the size of an A4 piece of paper (at least in the nanowerk post). They are durable because they are ceramic. Outside use is interesting. The "putting them on a tank to make it invisible by project what is behind it" reminds me of the Japanese guy who did that so it could be a possibility. Even so, this could lead to the whole Blade Runner "side of a building display" (heck, we are working real hard on getting the atmosphere as dirty!).

I know they say "safety" but I would first program in Billie Jean and become a u-tube star (if I could teach my neighbor's cat to turn into a tiger! lol)

My new X-mas wish list item!

Any other smashing, brilliant or wicked tech out there anybody know of?

i remember seeing something similar to this on an old dinsey movie called "Smart House"

That's pretty cool. The advances in material sciences over the last few years is pretty amazing. Sprayable ceramic means 3d printable ceramics. Which is awesome. I really hope 3d printing and small scale manufacturing can take off. Especially combined with all these new amazing materials that have come out. That's one of those things that has the potential to drastically change the world.

Also....the first thing I thought of after reading your post.

Funny how the sci-fi clichés are becoming normal, everyday tech!

I know everyone says, "jet packs" and "flying cars" but I will take "wall of video screen" any day!

You could be rocking out with the band and when the pizza delivery shows up the whole wall flashes when your phone rings!!

Here is the thread.

Liquid to a solid: Boron-modified silazanes for synthesis of SiBNC ceramics.

I have not heard any news since this was announced. It would make heat exchangers, like in supercritical CO2 turbines, a reality; now, today! I see it coating any pipe carrying liquid. And yes, they pre-heat it to form a jelly consistency that can be extruded through AMMs.

Like I said, I see it coming! But hate the waiting (it's the hardest part...)

They were making sidewalks out of the stuff in Michael Jackson's hood in the 80's.

Virtual windows is cooler.

I scoped them out for my bunker build.

This is the first time anyone has tried to embed electronics and photonics into ceramics or glass for a large-scale application.

nanowerk post

Well, it is not quite "winscape" but a step towards it!

Each "pixel" is the A4-sized tile. The size will have to shrink down but when it comes to tech, when have we not tried for smaller? I am sure they could make 2"x2", probably 1"x1" today, but they need to start somewhere, so announce the tech, make money, then go smaller.

Here is a weird use. Tennis courts! Give the divas nothing to complain about anymore. "Mr. McEnroe, the tile does not lie..."

Other sports: swimming, auto racing (pit boxes), baseball (never miss a missed bag call again), ...

I just ate so kind of lost my train of thought! Oh well.

No, according to the technical characteristics listed on the first link each tile is 30x30 centimetres and made of 16 "sub-pixels", each 7.5x7.5 centimetres (3"x3").

'I’d been told the day before that the paving stones wouldn’t all light up, that Michael couldn’t go wherever he wanted to go. There were 11 that lit up and they were all in a hop skotch pattern that they’d had to randomly decide over night. I had to say, ‘Michael I’m sorry, but there’s this stone that lights up, and then these two do, and then these two, and then that one does.’

Having not seen any rehearsal or anything, I was guessing at what he was going to do. I think he had been practising some moves, but how we was going to string them together was going to be a mystery. He looked at it all very carefully and looked at what I’d talked him through and then I said, ‘Michael, shall we just do a few rehearsals,’ and he said, ‘can we just shoot it?’

As the chorus approached, he started moving his leg a little bit more and then the chorus hit and he sprung into this dance that was unlike anything I’d ever seen.

telegraph.co.uk - 'The camera literally steamed up' – how I made the video for Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.

Pretty small hood with 11 tiles and all.

But don't worry, it went to 11!!

Ps - Thanks, now I know what pattern to place my LUMENTILEs on X-mas Day!

But you can put a ceramic tile on ground and step on it. Kind of hard to do to a glass window.

(Yeah, it is cooler. Got to admit that...)

D'oh!

My bad. I missed that in my excitement to post!

Thanks!

@ALL

ArMaP is right.

There are 3 different products being offered: floor, wall, and display.

The display version does not have haptic interaction but has sub-pixels as pointed out.

The other cool thing is they can make custom shaped tile "as long as they tessellate" so you could, say, have a hexagonal display, or triangle floor. These shapes do not have to be flat. They also have a few default colors when turned off.

Got a little over excited. Had left over pizza and heading towards the 2 o'clock cup of joe to make it through the day! Sorry for any confusion on my part!
